Bangalore: ZEISS India has announced a collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, to advance research in artificial intelligence (AI) applications for eye care. As part of this initiative, ZEISS has established a research facility at IISc, which will focus on developing AI-based solutions to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes in ophthalmology. The facility is supported by the Spectrum Lab within the Department of Electrical Engineering at IISc.
With the increasing prevalence of vision impairments worldwide, the research conducted at this facility aims to contribute to early diagnosis and more effective treatment approaches. The partnership will allow IISc researchers to explore AI-driven innovations in ophthalmology, with a focus on enhancing efficiency and precision in clinical applications.

Dr. Rajesh Sundaresan, Dean of Division (Electrical Electronics, and Computer Sciences Division), IISc, said, “This collaboration is a significant step toward empowering Indian researchers and advancing global eye-care innovation. Partnerships like these demonstrate how private players can accelerate innovation by leveraging academic expertise, leading to breakthrough technologies with real-world impact. “
In addition to research, ZEISS India is supporting six MTech students at IISc for the next three years through a fellowship program for those specializing in Signal Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science & Engineering, and Computational and Data Science.
Beyond research and academic support, the collaboration also aims to promote awareness and trust in AI-driven eye care solutions through public engagement initiatives such as demonstrations, exhibitions, and patient testimonials. The initiative seeks to highlight the potential of AI in making eye care more accessible and cost-effective.
