The 2026 WTA Finals now has its eight confirmed participants who will feature in the season-ending tournament at Indian Wells. Karolina Muchova secured the final spot after Marta Kostyuk retired from her second-round match at the Ningbo Open on Wednesday.
The Ukrainian had the advantage in the qualification race and needed to reach the final in Ningbo to make the cut. However, she retired after taking a medical timeout, having lost the first set 6-4 to Ekaterina Alexandrova, handing the final spot to the Czech.
Muchova joins World No.1 Elena Rybakina, Indian Wells and Miami champion Aryna Sabalenka, Roland-Garros winner Mirra Andreeva, Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Elina Svitolina.
Four of the eight players — Rybakina, Sabalenka, Pegula and Gauff — featured in the 2025 edition of the Finals, while Andreeva, Noskova and Muchova are set to make their debuts.
The tournament will take place from November 8 to 15.
How does the line-up stack up?
Rybakina heads the eight-player field as the defending champion, having won her maiden WTA Finals title in Riyadh last year without losing a match. The Kazakh enjoyed a spectacular 2026 season, winning two Grand Slam titles — Australian Open and US Open — and displacing Sabalenka to top the world rankings for the first time. She won three titles this year, including the Stuttgart Open.
Her main rival will be Sabalenka, who, by the standards she has set, has endured a disappointing season. She reached two Grand Slam finals in 2026 but ended the year without a major title, her first Slam-less season since 2022. Her performances since the US Open have also raised questions about her form. However, she will relish returning to Indian Wells, where she won the title this year by beating Rybakina.
Andreeva, Gauff and Pegula will also be in contention. The 19-year-old Russian French Open champion qualified after reaching the 50-win mark this season and clinching her maiden Grand Slam title. Despite an inconsistent second half of the year, she will look to finish the season on a high note.
Americans Gauff and Pegula have been models of consistency. Playing on home soil should provide them extra motivation. Gauff won the Cincinnati title this year, while Pegula lifted the trophy in Dubai.
The remaining spots bring a blend of Eastern and Central European talent. Svitolina, who has qualified for her first Finals since 2019, has shown that she can beat the biggest names on the circuit. She defeated Rybakina and Iga Swiatek within roughly 21 hours before beating Gauff in the Rome final.
Muchova reached the Wimbledon final but has struggled to maintain momentum in the second half of the season. She missed the Toronto and Cincinnati tournaments to undergo a minor procedure, lost in Wuhan and skipped Ningbo and Tokyo.
Noskova, who was seeded ninth at Wimbledon, defeated Muchova in the final before adding the Berlin title to her list of achievements. She is the lowest ranked player in the qualifying race, but her Wimbledon triumph underlines her ability to deliver on the biggest stage.
No Swiatek this time
Former world No.1 Iga Swiatek had a chance to qualify for the Finals when she travelled to Ningbo as the second seed, but she withdrew due to an injury and opted to end her season early. It will be the first time she has missed the year-ending tournament since 2019.
The Polish six-time Grand Slam champion endured a relatively underwhelming season. she won just one title — the Canadian Open — and failed to claim a Grand Slam for the first time since 2021. She also slipped to ninth in the world rankings.
Why is the WTA Finals taking place at Indian Wells?
The WTA’s deal with Saudi Arabia ended in July, but a joint statement from the women’s global body and the Saudi Tennis Federation did not provide a reason for the change. Media reports, however, have linked the decision to the war and instability in the Middle East.
There has also been no official explanation for the choice of Indian Wells as the venue for the 2026 edition. The California venue will host the tournament on a one-off basis, with the WTA Finals set to move to Charlotte next year.
