Dreading Diwali cleaning? These simple hacks will save you time

Diwali is a time for decorating homes, preparing festive treats and welcoming friends and family. But before the celebrations begin, there is one task many households have to tackle: cleaning every corner of the house. From dusty ceiling fans and greasy kitchen cabinets to cluttered wardrobes and dull windows, getting everything ready can feel like a project in itself.

The trick is to avoid doing everything at once. A little planning, the right cleaning order and a few simple hacks can make the process much more manageable. Instead of spending an entire day scrubbing, work through one area at a time and focus on the spots that need the most attention.

Here are some practical Diwali cleaning hacks to help you prepare your home for the festive season without unnecessary stress.

1. Declutter before you start cleaning

Before reaching for the duster or mop, clear away things you no longer need. Old newspapers, empty boxes, unused containers and clothes that have been sitting untouched in your wardrobe can make cleaning more time-consuming.

Use three separate bags or boxes: one for items you want to keep, one for things you can donate and another for items that need to be discarded. Once the clutter is out of the way, it becomes easier to clean shelves, cupboards and other surfaces properly.

2. Clean from top to bottom

One common mistake during deep cleaning is starting with the floors. Dust from ceiling fans, light fittings and high shelves can settle on surfaces below, leaving you with more work later.

Begin with ceiling fans, cobwebs, light fixtures and the tops of cupboards. Move on to furniture, shelves and windows before finishing with vacuuming or mopping. This simple change in order can save both time and effort.

Remember to switch off the power before cleaning electrical fittings, and use a dry or slightly damp cloth as appropriate for the surface.

3. Give greasy kitchen cabinets extra attention

Kitchen cabinets often collect a stubborn layer of oil and dust, particularly around the stove and cooking area. Start by emptying one cabinet at a time and wiping away loose dust before tackling sticky patches.

For suitable surfaces, use warm water with a little washing-up liquid and a soft cloth. For more stubborn marks, a small amount of baking soda mixed with water may help, but test it on an inconspicuous area first.

Avoid abrasive scrubbers that could scratch the finish. Also, do not use acidic cleaners such as vinegar or lemon juice on marble and other acid-sensitive natural stone surfaces, as they can damage the finish.

4. Refresh curtains, cushion covers and upholstery

Soft furnishings can collect dust and make a room feel less fresh. Wash curtains and cushion covers if their care labels permit it, and allow them to dry completely before putting them back.

Vacuum sofas, paying attention to the gaps between cushions and the areas beneath the seats. For stains, check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions before applying a product. Test any cleaner on a hidden patch first to avoid discolouration.

Freshly cleaned furnishings can make the living room feel noticeably tidier, especially if you are expecting guests during the festive season.

5. Make windows and mirrors sparkle

Dusty windows and streaky mirrors can make an otherwise clean room look unfinished. Use a suitable glass cleaner and a clean microfibre cloth to wipe the glass.

Do not forget window sills, frames, tracks and grills, where dust tends to accumulate. Remove loose dirt first so that it does not turn into muddy streaks when you wipe the area with a damp cloth.

For better results, finish one window at a time rather than moving between several areas.

6. Do not overlook fans, switches and door handles

Small, frequently touched areas are easy to miss during festive cleaning. Ceiling fans, door handles, remote controls, switchboards and the tops of door frames can accumulate dust and grime over time.

Wipe these surfaces with a suitable cloth or cleaner, taking care not to let moisture enter electrical switches or sockets. Always turn off the power before cleaning switchboards, and avoid spraying liquid directly onto electrical fittings.

Paying attention to these overlooked spots can make the overall cleaning feel more complete.

7. Tackle bathrooms before the final floor cleaning

Bathrooms need a little extra attention before guests arrive. Clean the washbasin, taps, mirrors, shower area and toilet using products suitable for each surface.

An old, soft toothbrush can help reach corners and grout lines, while a microfibre cloth can remove water marks from suitable surfaces. Follow product instructions and never mix cleaning chemicals, particularly bleach with acidic cleaners or ammonia-based products.

Finish by rinsing surfaces where required and allowing them to dry properly.

8. Leave the floors and decorations until last

Once the dusting, cupboard cleaning and window cleaning are complete, vacuum or sweep the floors before mopping. Move lightweight furniture where practical so you can reach the corners and spaces beneath it.

After the floors have dried, arrange your festive decorations, lights and torans. Clean the entrance and balcony, too, as these areas are often among the first spaces visitors see.

A simple way to make Diwali cleaning manageable

You do not have to deep-clean the entire house in one day. Divide the work into shorter sessions and finish one room before moving to the next. Start with decluttering and less frequently used spaces, then move to the kitchen, bathrooms and living areas.

The biggest time-saving trick is to clean in the right order rather than rushing through every room. With a little planning, you can get your home ready for Diwali while leaving yourself enough time to enjoy the celebrations.
