Pawar, who was speaking in Markarwadi in Solapur district, exhorted the people throughout the state to pass resolutions against the use of EVMs in the elections. “If possible, try to pass a resolution at the village level that you don’t want to hold elections through EVMs and want it to be held through ballot papers… We will ensure that it reaches the right people,” said Pawar.
The NCP-SP president addressed a rally in Solapur as some villagers had questioned the results of the recent assembly polls in Malshiras constituency of Maharashtra as they claimed that they had voted for the NCP-SP candidate Uttamrao Jankar but Jankar got less votes from the village. There are, however, others in the Markarwadi village who dispute this claim.
The Maharashtra Opposition is using the Markarwadi issue to claim that the assembly results were “manufactured” through the use of EVMs. Pawar while speaking to mediapersons questioned the assembly poll result by claiming that in spite of winning more votes, the Maharashtra Opposition has got less seats. “Congress got 80 lakh votes and 15 MLAs elected, whereas Shiv Sena (Shinde) got 79 lakh votes and managed to get 57 candidates elected. Ajit Pawar (NCP) got 58 lakh votes and got 41 candidates elected whereas we got 72 lakh votes and only 10 candidates elected,” said Pawar.
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde questioned Pawar on the more votes and less seats argument, saying, “The Congress fought on more seats and hence got more votes, we fought on fewer seats than the Congress, so naturally there would be a difference in the number of votes that we got.”
