The recently concluded G20 Summit, held in India, has left an indelible mark on the nation’s tourism landscape. With delegations from 20 nations converging on Indian soil, the country has basked in the global spotlight. The impact of this summit extends beyond politics and economics; it has profound implications for Indian tourism and safety.
Rahul Joshi, General Manager, Taj Hotel and Convention Centre, Agra, shared insights into the impact of the G20 Summit on tourism in India. He believes that the G20 Summit has positively contributed to India’s image as a safe and welcoming destination, which will attract more foreign tourists in the long run. The event also served as a platform to showcase India’s rich cultural heritage, inspiring travelers from various source markets.
Jasmeet Kochhar, Executive Director, Avalon Cottages, articulated the significance of the G20 Summit, “The recently held G20 Summit has put India center stage. With delegations coming in from 20 nations across the world, India has definitely been able to garner the world’s attention. This will definitely add a lot of thrust to inbound tourism and play a pivotal role in the economic growth of the country.”
Indeed, India’s allure as a tourist destination is set to soar. Kochhar is optimistic that the attention generated by the G20 Summit will boost tourism activities sooner rather than later. “India will become a must-visit destination for travelers worldwide,” opines Kochhar.
Safety is a paramount concern for any tourist, and the successful completion of the G20 Summit underscores India’s status as a safe destination. Jasmeet Kochhar states, “The successful completion of the G20 Summit is also a great positive statement on India’s safety status, and I am sure tourists from across the world will now feel more assured while visiting India,” adds Kochhar.
In the backdrop of these developments, World Tourism Day on September 27th, 2023, takes on a special significance. “India’s tourism industry has exhibited remarkable resilience and performance. In February 2023 alone, the country welcomed an impressive 8.6 million foreign tourists, marking a robust start to the year,” says Nishant Pitti, CEO and Co-Founder, EaseMyTrip.
To put this achievement into perspective, India ranked as the 22nd most visited country in the world in 2019, with around 11 million international arrivals and nearly 7 million non-resident Indian arrivals. These numbers not only highlight India’s enduring appeal as a tourist hotspot but also its ability to outshine global competitors.
“2023 promises to see Indian tourists emerging as top spenders in the global travel landscape. Flights continue to operate at full capacity, and popular travel destinations witness a steady influx of visitors,” adds Pitti. With a projected surge in domestic flyers and a robust travel industry poised to touch nearly $15 billion by year-end, Indian travelers are exploring their own nation and venturing abroad with enthusiasm.
What Does Hosting Miss World Mean For India’s Travel Industry?
Jamil Saidi, Chairman of PME Entertainment, emphasizes the positive impact of hosting Miss World in India on the country’s tourism industry. He notes, “With India’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and warm hospitality, it makes it an ideal destination for such a global event.” Saidi believes that this event will showcase India’s tourism potential to a global audience, potentially attracting future travelers.
In conclusion, the G20 Summit has not only catapulted India onto the world stage but also augured well for its tourism industry. With a focus on safety and an ever-growing appeal, India is poised to become a top choice for global travelers. The resilience and adventurous spirit of Indian travelers are set to make them significant contributors to global tourism revenue, further solidifying their position in the international tourism landscape.
Sustainable Tourism
To mitigate the negative impact of tourism on the environment, Taj Hotels & Resorts have adopted sustainable practices. They focus on conserving water through rain harvesting pits and water treatment plants, utilize wet waste for cooking via a biogas chamber, and encourage eco-friendly commuting with EV chargers. They engage their staff in environmental initiatives, promoting responsibility towards the environment.
Regarding preserving cultural heritage and promoting cultural exchange, Joshi emphasizes the importance of travelers engaging with locals, respecting customs and traditions, and practicing responsible travel, such as reducing waste. Taj Hotel & Convention Centre Agra actively supports local artisans and craftsmen, offering guests a glimpse into the local culture through activities and authentic food. Hotels, according to Mr. Joshi, play a pivotal role in promoting heritage and facilitating cultural exchange.
