Psychology Says Sleep Pressure Can Follow You Through The Day
One of the most influential frameworks in sleep science is Alexander Borbély’s Two-Process Model of Sleep Regulation.
The model proposes that sleep is governed by two interacting processes: Process S, the homeostatic pressure for sleep that builds while a person stays awake, and Process C, the circadian system that influences alertness and sleepiness across roughly a 24-hour cycle.
If someone repeatedly sleeps too little, their accumulated sleep pressure can remain high. A person may therefore function through the day while experiencing persistent sleepiness, reduced alertness and a strong desire to rest.
This is one reason someone can say, “I slept last night, but I still feel exhausted today.” One night of sleep does not necessarily erase a longer pattern of insufficient recovery.
Your Circadian Rhythm Can Make Energy Rise And Fall
The circadian rhythm is another important part of the equation. The body’s internal clock influences sleep propensity and alertness throughout the day. Research on sleep regulation shows that circadian signals can promote wakefulness during parts of the day while increasing sleep propensity at other times.
This means feeling less energetic at a particular time does not automatically indicate laziness.
For example, someone may feel relatively alert in the morning, experience a pronounced afternoon dip and then become more energetic again later in the evening. Individual chronotype can influence when a person’s natural alertness tends to peak.Someone whose biological timing clashes with work or school schedules may consequently feel as though they are tired “all day,” even when the problem is partly a mismatch between their internal clock and their daily obligations.
Mental Fatigue Can Make The Body Feel Exhausted
Not all tiredness begins in the muscles. Psychologists and neuroscientists also distinguish mental or cognitive fatigue, which can emerge after prolonged demanding cognitive activity.
A person who spends hours solving problems, switching between tasks, answering messages, making decisions and concentrating intensely may experience a subjective feeling of exhaustion even without physical exertion. Research describes mental fatigue as a psychobiological state associated with feelings of tiredness and reduced capacity after demanding cognitive activity.
Consider someone who spends an entire workday moving between meetings, spreadsheets, emails and deadlines. By 5 p.m., they may feel physically drained despite spending most of the day sitting. The brain has been working continuously.
Chronic Stress Can Keep The Body In A High-Demand State
Another possible explanation involves allostatic load, a concept associated with the work of Bruce McEwen and colleagues.
Allostasis refers to the body’s process of adapting to changing demands. Allostatic load describes the cumulative physiological burden associated with repeated or prolonged adaptation to stress.
Research has linked chronic stress and allostatic load with changes across multiple physiological systems, while systematic reviews have examined associations between higher allostatic load and poorer health outcomes. This does not mean that feeling tired proves someone has high allostatic load. That would be an overinterpretation.
But the concept helps explain why someone dealing with prolonged work pressure, relationship conflict, financial uncertainty or caregiving responsibilities may feel depleted even when they technically have enough time in bed.
Sleep Inertia Can Make Mornings Feel Like A Continuation Of The Night
Some people begin the day already feeling mentally slow. This can involve sleep inertia, the temporary period of reduced alertness and impaired cognitive performance after waking. Research shows that sleep inertia can be stronger after sleep loss and can be influenced by the time of awakening and the sleep stage from which a person wakes.
For example, someone who wakes abruptly from deeper sleep because of an alarm may feel foggy, heavy and unusually tired for a period after getting out of bed.
If this experience occurs repeatedly, the person may describe themselves as someone who is “tired all day,” even though different mechanisms may be contributing at different points of the day.
Feeling Tired All Day Is Not Always A Psychological Problem
The most important caveat is that persistent fatigue should not automatically be explained through psychology.
Sleep disorders, anaemia, thyroid problems, medication effects, nutritional deficiencies, infections, depression, anxiety and other medical conditions can contribute to persistent tiredness. Psychology can explain some mechanisms surrounding fatigue, but it cannot determine the cause of an individual’s symptoms.
Likewise, being tired does not automatically mean someone is unmotivated. A person can be ambitious, disciplined and highly productive while experiencing significant fatigue.
The more useful psychological question is therefore not “Why is this person so lazy?” but “What combination of sleep, circadian timing, cognitive demand, stress and recovery might be influencing their energy?”
