Delhi: A survey by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) found that 87 per cent of adults in Delhi would prefer adopting a plant-based diet over using injectable drugs for weight loss, indicating a strong preference for lifestyle-driven approaches to managing health.
The survey comes amid rising concerns over early-onset obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension among young adults in the city.
It also found that while 87 per cent of respondents have attempted to lose weight at some point, only 33 per cent were able to maintain that weight loss long-term. Currently, 35 per cent of those surveyed report living with excess weight.
Dr. Zeeshan Ali, research program specialist at PCRM, noted: “The survey highlights how open Delhi residents are to change when they understand the benefits. A plant-based diet not only supports weight management but also helps reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.”
The leading motivations for weight loss included reducing the risk of chronic diseases (54 per cent) and improving self-esteem (50 per cent). However, 35 per cent of respondents cited the availability and affordability of unhealthy food as the biggest barrier to weight loss, followed by lack of time or motivation to exercise (30 per cent).
While injectable weight-loss medications are increasingly discussed, the survey found gaps in public understanding. About 79 per cent of respondents were aware of potential side effects during use, and 76 per cent had heard of side effects after discontinuation. Despite growing awareness, most respondents indicated a preference for safer, food-based alternatives.
The findings also show broad support for public education: 89 per cent said it is important for people in India to learn about non-drug-based weight loss methods, and 88 per cent believe these alternatives should receive greater attention.
According to PCRM, the results reflect growing public interest in long-term, nutrition-focused approaches to health, and point to an opportunity to promote accessible, evidence-based lifestyle solutions in urban India.
