Blanket Out, Fan On: Techie’s Smart Sleep Hack Goes Viral (Photo: X)
A software engineer in Bengaluru has built an AI-powered “roommate” that adjusts his ceiling fan automatically based on how he sleeps. The idea came after he felt too hot or too cold midway through the night.
The innovation was shared by Pankaj, who uses the handle @the2ndfloorguy on X. He wrote that he was “tired of waking up at 3 am either sweaty or freezing,” which led him to train a system to monitor his sleep posture and control the fan.
He said that if his arms or legs were sticking out from under the blanket, the system understood that he was feeling hot and switched the fan on. If his arms were curled up, suggesting he was cold, the fan turned off.
How does the setup work?
The system uses a remote button pusher device that physically presses the fan switch after receiving signals.
Pankaj explained that the setup runs a MediaPipe pose vision model on his Raspberry Pi home server. It detects his sleeping position in real time and sends commands to activate or deactivate the fan. He described it as what a “real smart home” looks like.
An image shared with the post showed a simple bedroom with a camera overlay marking body joints and a label reading “FAN_ON ratio=2.32,” showing how the system tracks pose detection.
i was tired of waking up at 3 am either sweaty or freezing. so i taught my ai roommate to automatically control the fan by watching me sleep 📸arms or leg sticking out means i’m hot so fan turns on, arms curled up means i’m cold so fan turns off. it uses a remote button pusher… https://t.co/WYkbbcVoVH pic.twitter.com/slpENOzX9I

Social media reacts
The invention gained attention online, with many users praising the idea and its execution.
One user wrote, “You are building solutions every other day like they are piece of cake !! Total out-of-the-box thinking and great use of tech.”
Another commented, “Your AI roommate does more for you than most actual roommates.”
Several others called it a practical example of AI application, describing it as a personalised comfort solution built from scratch. Some users also asked for a tutorial or GitHub link so they could recreate the setup at home.
