California (USA): Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on June 16 expressed serious concerns over the Election Commission of India’s conduct since 2014, questioning its ability to ensure free and fair elections. Responding to reports of a Shiv Sena leader’s relative allegedly using a mobile phone to unlock EVMs in Maharashtra’s Goregaon, Sibal emphasized that the FIR lodged was unrelated to the EVMs themselves. Speaking to ANI, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said, “I will speak on this matter later on, but right now I want to say that the FIR that has been lodged, is not in connection with the EVM issue. And the way the Election Commission has been behaving since 2014, all the opposition parties should seriously think about whether can there be a fair and free election in our country if constitutional institutions adopt this attitude… This is a very important issue and the opposition should raise it strongly in the session. And I think the attitude of the Election Commission of India, especially the Chief Election Commissioner has not been fair, the opposition will take action on this…”
