International Yoga Day 2026 Highlights: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday led the nation in observing the 12th International Day of Yoga from Red Road in Kolkata.
The theme for this year’s celebration, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlights the role of yoga in enhancing physical health, mental well-being, emotional resilience and active ageing, thereby improving overall quality of life.
Speaking at the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations on the city’s iconic Red Road, PM Modi highlighted the importance of personal discipline. Further, the PM advocated the utility of yoga not only in boosting personal health but also as a catalyst for world peace.
Against the backdrop of multiple global conflicts and geopolitical tensions, he argued that the ancient Indian practice holds relevance far beyond physical wellness.
International Day of Yoga celebrations were organised at nearly 2,500 locations worldwide, with over 210 Indian missions and posts participating, reaffirming yoga’s emergence as a global movement promoting health, harmony and collective well-being.
Since the United Nations General Assembly adopted India’s proposal in 2015 to designate June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, PM Modi has led the celebrations from several locations, including New Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Mysuru, New York, Srinagar and Visakhapatnam, the statement said.
