French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne’s government on Monday narrowly survived the first — and extra dangerous — of two no-confidence motions over its determination to bypass parliament and impose a controversial pension reform.
The 577-seat National Assembly decrease home rejected the motion by simply 9 votes, with 278 votes in favour of ousting the government, speaker Yael Braun-Pivet introduced.
The failed motion was introduced by the centrist Liot coalition and backed by the left-wing opposition.
Lawmakers then started voting on a second no-confidence motion introduced by the far-right National Rally (RN) seen as much less harmful for the government. Results have been anticipated imminently.
The government was depending on members of the right-wing opposition The Republicans not voting for the first motion so as to survive.
Analysts had spoken of the motion being rejected by some 20 votes and the only digit margin is a brand new blow for Borne and her government.
Left-wing MPs after the outcomes have been introduced chanted “resign! resign!” at Borne after the outcomes have been introduced and brandished indicators denouncing the pensions reform.
