Biosolutions are technologies and products that use living organisms—like bacteria, yeast, fungi, and enzymes—to replace chemical, synthetic, or fossil-fuel-based processes.
Novonesis had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government earlier this year.
“The ₹2,500-3,000 crore investment in India is over two-three years,” Krishna Mohan Puvvada, Regional President-Middle East, India and Africa, Novonesis, said.

Patalganga is expected to play a key role in the expansion, given that Novonesis already operates a facility there and has significant unused land that can accommodate additional capacity.
“We are looking towards leveraging Patalganga more, because only 10% of the overall land has been utilised,” Puvvada said.Novonesis also has a facility at Wada in Maharashtra.
In 2024, Chr. Hansen and Novozymes joined forces to form Novonesis. It recorded total sales of Euro 4.2 billion in 2025.
In India the company supplies enzymes, yeast and other biological technologies to customers across more than 30 industries.
Novonesis said its newer yeast technologies can cut fermentation time by around 25%, helping reduce energy consumption and production risks while improving yields.
The company has also introduced a biological solution in Karnataka that it says can raise sugarcane yields by about 15%, potentially improving the economics of feedstock for ethanol producers. However, the company clarified it is not into ethanol or biofuel production.

Novonesis is additionally working with organised companies in India’s emerging biogas sector. Trials involving different feedstocks have resulted in output gains ranging from more than 15% to 25-30% in a few cases.
However, Puvvada said regulatory hurdles, particularly in the agriculture sector, remain a key challenge for wider adoption of biological solutions.
