Logitech, a $5 billion Swiss major, is a household name in India, known for its personal computer accessories like mice and webcams. However, not many are aware that the company’s research and development centre in Chennai plays a major role in designing some of these products, and also the software embedded in these devices.
The seven-year-old centre employs around 450 people and is crucial to the company, said Moninder Jain, Vice-President & Head of Emerging Markets, Logitech.
The Chennai R&D Centre is a critical engine of innovation for the company. While physical manufacturing takes place in various locations, Chennai is where much of the “intelligence” behind the products is developed.. The centre drives the design and development of the essential software and firmware components that make the products not only user-friendly but also highly interoperable, he told businessline.
Giving an example, Jain said the Chennai centre ensures seamless integration with major communication platforms (such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google) and enhances product capabilities in areas like video conferencing, gaming peripherals, and business solutions. In addition, the centre is equipped with testing facilities to rigorously assess video, audio, Bluetooth, and other functionalities, ensuring the products meet high quality and performance standards globally, he said.
The Chennai R&D Centre collaborates closely with other centres and business groups around the world to ensure that innovations and technical advancements are shared and integrated across all product lines. This collaboration occurs through regular knowledge exchange and coordinated product development efforts where Chennai’s teams contribute specialized expertise in software, firmware, and rigorous product testing, the executive said.
Jain said the demand for the company’s products in India will increase manifold in three categories — personal computers, video conferencing and e-gaming. The company has products for all three sectors, and the demand is growing, he said without disclosing any numbers.
