Cracking down on people given to spitting in public places, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has issued 22 e-memos in last 10 days against two-wheeler and three-wheeler riders for “creating a public nuisance”.
Based on CCTV footage captured in cameras installed at the traffic junctions in different parts of the city, the Solid Waste Management department of AMC has issued these e-memos under the Public Health Bylaws 2012 between November 4 and November 14.
The e-memos issued to violators under Sections 50.1 (3) and 50.1 (7) of Public Health Bylaws, 2012, for spitting in public and risking the health of others carry the date, time, vehicle number and address attached with two photographs in which the riders could be seen spitting in public places. The e-memo states the offenders were seen “spitting from the vehicle and creating a public nuisance”.
AMC officials said that the penalty for the offence has recently doubled from Rs 100 to Rs 200. If not paid within a week, the penalty will increase to Rs 500 for each instance, they added.
As per the data shared by the AMC, on Friday alone, a dozen two-wheelers were penalised along with a three-wheeler offender besides two persons riding four-wheelers – the day’s fine totalling to Rs 3,000.
