Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews denied Shakib Al Hasan and Najmul Shanto their centuries in a hotly-contested encounter against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Monday, November 6.

It was a classic case of poetic justice for Mathews as he denied Shakib and Shanto their centuries in New Delhi. Mathews became the first player to be timed out in international cricket after Shakib and Shanto appealed for him to be dismissed for taking too much time after coming in to bat.
Mathews dismissed Shakib after he scored 82 runs off 65 balls, hitting 12 boundaries and two sixes, before sending Shanto back to the pavilion having scored a 101-ball 90.
After dismissing Shakib, Mathews even gave him a send-off, pointing to his watch to remind the Bangladesh skipper of his own dismissal in the first innings.
Shanto formed a 169-run stand with skipper Shakib Al Hasan after Bangladesh lost the early wickets of Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan in the powerplay. The two batters took Bangladesh from 41 for 2 to 211 for 4, changing the game’s tide.
Shanto came into this game after struggling for form, having scored just 28 runs in his last six matches in the ongoing World Cup. After scoring an unbeaten 59 against Afghanistan in Bangladesh’s 2023 World Cup opener, Shanto had registered scores of 0, 7, 8, 0, 9 and 4.
In the first innings, Charith Asalanka slammed his maiden ODI World Cup century to help Sri Lanka post 279 runs on the scoreboard. Asalanka scored 108 runs off 105 balls, hitting six boundaries and five sixes against Bangladesh, while Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis chipped in with 41 runs each.
