Will AI steal your job? From pay rises to pink slips, how UAE employees are changing career goals
Paychecks Are Out, Job Survival Is In: UAE’s AI Wake-Up Call

Welcome to the age where your biggest career flex is not a bigger paycheck instead, it is not being replaced by a machine. With artificial intelligence (AI) transforming how work gets done in the UAE, employees are rethinking priorities, putting job security and future-proof skills ahead of traditional salary ambitions. Not long ago, office small talk in the UAE revolved around raises, promotions and corner offices. Now it is about AI tools, automation and a quiet question lurking behind every Zoom call, “Will my job still exist in five years?” As artificial intelligence reshapes workplaces at breakneck speed, job security has officially become the new status symbol.A recent regional survey reveals that employees in the UAE and the broader Gulf are growing increasingly cautious about career prospects as AI reshapes the workplace, with job security now overtaking traditional concerns like salary increases. The shift reflects both the rapid adoption of AI technologies and a broader recalibration of workforce priorities in an era of digital transformation. As artificial intelligence tightens its grip on the workplace, Middle East employees are rethinking what matters most. The Middle East Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey 2025 found that 85% of respondents now prioritise job security over salary growth, reflecting growing concerns around long-term stability. Key insights include 75% AI adoption (above global 69%), high skills learning (64% vs 56% global) and job security as top priority amid rising fatigue. In other words, the findings come as AI adoption accelerates, with 75% of workers using AI tools in their roles last year and nearly 30% turning to generative AI daily, surpassing global averages.

AI adoption is skyrocketing but so are fears about job security

The UAE has rapidly emerged as a global leader in AI readiness, with 80% of professionals now regularly using AI tools in their work, according to a LinkedIn survey. This marks a significant increase in workplace integration of AI solutions, with employees leveraging tools to boost productivity, streamline tasks and solve complex problems.

However, this rapid uptake comes with mixed feelings. While many embrace AI as an efficiency enhancer, the pressure to adapt swiftly is mounting. Nearly three-quarters of professionals report treating AI upskilling almost like a “second job”, reflecting the level of effort needed to keep pace with technological change. Additional data from a separate Dubai government report shows that 55% of public sector employees worry about job displacement due to generative AI, even as an overwhelming 94% express optimism about the technology’s overall impact on operations. The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) report titled Generative AI Adoption Amongst Dubai Government Employees, launched in partnership with Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government (MBRSG) at Dubai AI Week 2025, conducted the study on employees across 34 departments and confirmed 55% job displacement concerns amid 94% optimism for operational gains.

Workers prioritise security over salaries

This shift in worker sentiment is now evident in labour priorities. With AI tools taking on an increasing range of tasks, from data analysis to routine administrative work, employees are showing a strong preference for job stability, even at the expense of higher wages. Analysts say that this reflects a broader trend where long-term career resilience and adaptability are valued above short-term earnings. Indeed, one notable trend across the UAE and Saudi Arabia is that nearly two-thirds of workers would be willing to take a pay cut in exchange for AI upskilling opportunities, according to a regional survey, a stark contrast to traditional workforce expectations. Oliver Wyman’s regional survey report confirmed that nearly two-thirds of workers in the UAE (67%) and Saudi Arabia (70%) would accept a pay cut for AI upskilling opportunities, far above the global average of 41%.This mid-2025 global study of professionals highlights the pragmatic shift towards long-term career resilience amid AI adoption.

Employers respond with new priorities

Human resource executives across GCC states now identify talent acquisition, digital transformation and employee retention as their top priorities amid AI integration. The recent industry study, PwC Middle East Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey 2025, noted that 80% of regional HR professionals (including recruiters) anticipate significant AI impact on jobs, with many teams investing in digital upskilling and role redesign to complement AI systems.

In other words, 80% of recruiters believe that AI will affect jobs in the region and many HR teams are already adapting by investing in digital training and reshaping job roles to work in tandem with AI systems. This aligns with broader GCC trends where HR adapts via training to mitigate displacement risks. At the same time, UAE companies are tasked with balancing technological advancement with workforce well-being. While automation offers clear benefits in sectors like banking, logistics and public services, the human impact (including retraining, transitions into higher-skilled roles and equitable access to opportunities) remains top of mind for both employers and employees.

What this means for the future of work in the UAE

Experts say that the UAE workforce’s shift towards prioritising job security is not just a reactive response to automation fears. It reflects a strategic recalibration of career planning, where adaptability, continuous learning and digital fluency are becoming core to employability. As AI continues to permeate industries, professionals are increasingly investing in skills that can complement, rather than compete with, intelligent machines. This evolving mindset may well define the next chapter of work in the UAE, one where human talent and AI coexist and where job stability stems not from standing still but from staying ahead of technological change.
