The new US President Donald Trump administration has revamped the White House website about COVID-19 into one that supports a controversial ‘lab-leak’ theory page, regarding the pandemic’s origin.
On the website is which reads ‘Lab Leak The True Origin Of COVID-19’ is a photo of President Donald Trump walking.
The website states that Wuhan, China, where the coronavirus initially began to spread, hosts a research laboratory known for conducting virus research under “inadequate biosafety levels”. The web page accused Dr Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the “preferred narrative” of how COVID-19 originated in nature.
Aside from Fauci, the White House blames former President Joe Biden and the World Health Organization (WHO). The website reads, “The WHO’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic was an abject failure because it caved to pressure from the Chinese Communist Party and placed China’s political interests ahead of its international duties.”

The origins of COVID-19 remain unproven. According to the Associated Press (AP), scientists are uncertain whether the virus originated from an animal, as is common with many other viruses, or resulted from a laboratory accident. A US intelligence assessment released in 2023 concluded that there is not enough evidence to support either theory definitively.
However, the website claims, “viruses possess a biological characteristic that is not found in nature”. It further said, “data shows that all COVID-19 cases stem from a single introduction into humans.” In its key pointers, it claimed that the Wuhan research lab “has a history of conducting gain-of-function research (gene altering and organism supercharging) at inadequate biosafety levels”.
In its final pointer is alleged, “By nearly all measures of science, if there was evidence of a natural origin it would have already surfaced. But it hasn’t.”
China has consistently dismissed the lab-leak theory as “extremely unlikely” and has called on the United States to stop politicising the investigation into the origins of the virus.
Jamie Metzl, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, said, “I welcome all efforts to dig deeper. But it would be a terrible shame if such efforts distracted from essential work to help prevent further infections and treat people suffering from Covid-19 and long Covid,” according to The Times Of India.
While it’s typical for government websites to undergo changes with a new administration, the most recent revamp has been notably more extensive. Public health data was removed, especially information related to transgender individuals. Additionally, the Pentagon took down images that were seen as promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
