US-Iran War Peace Deal LIVE Updates: President Donald Trump has described the newly signed memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran as an “unconditional surrender” by Tehran. The memorandum, signed this week, launches a 60-day period of talks aimed at reaching a final agreement to end the ongoing war.
The text of the document calls for “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon,” setting out an ambitious roadmap toward de-escalation across the region.
In Tehran, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, confirmed that he personally authorised the understanding with Washington, while making clear he did not fully endorse its terms. In a message read out on state broadcaster IRIB on Thursday evening, Khamenei accused Trump of having “out of desperation, resorted to various forms of pressure and leverage to bring about this outcome,” highlighting the deep mistrust that still defines relations between the two countries.
Despite the memorandum’s call for a halt to hostilities, Israel has reiterated that it will not withdraw from Lebanon, underscoring a major obstacle to implementing any final settlement. The Israeli government has also been sharply critical of the US-Iran agreement, prompting a pointed response from Washington.
US Vice President JD Vance, who has been closely involved in the administration’s efforts, has postponed a planned trip to Switzerland, where talks on the next steps in the peace process were originally scheduled for Friday. The White House cited practical difficulties in explaining the delay.
“The logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable. As of now the Vice President is not departing tonight,” a White House spokesperson said late Thursday. “We look forward to beginning technical talks as soon as possible.”
Vance also delivered a blunt message to members of the Israeli government who have attacked Trump over the deal, warning them against alienating Washington at a pivotal moment.
“If I was in the Cabinet of the Israeli government, I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that I have anywhere left in the entire world,” he said.
The coming 60 days of negotiations will determine whether the memorandum of understanding can be transformed into a lasting agreement to end the war, or whether the deep political divisions it has exposed will derail the process before it begins.
