A group of disgruntled legislators from the ruling Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) on Friday held a meeting in Srinagar to discuss growing discontent within the party, raising questions over the leadership, functioning of the government and the recent cabinet reshuffle.
The meeting, held at the Srinagar residence of Qaisar Jamshed Lone, MLA from Lolab, which lasted for hours, was attended by several party MLAs, while some joined virtually owing to prior commitments.
Sources said the legislators took a collective oath and resolved to press for four major demands, including the removal of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, the dropping of ministers who have completed two years in office, and the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary.
The legislators have also demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Roads and Buildings (R&B) portfolio from the Deputy Chief Minister and called for a comprehensive cabinet reshuffle in consultation with all MLAs.
The proposed reshuffle, they said, should be based on minimum eligibility criteria and ensure rational representation.
The meeting comes amid growing resentment among a section of NC legislators, who have accused the party leadership of ignoring their suggestions and inputs, particularly after the recent cabinet expansion and reshuffle.
Sources said some legislators have expressed concern over the continuation of ministers they consider non-performing while also questioning the leadership’s failure to accommodate their views.

Discussions also addressed the political approach towards the Centre and the exit of Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi from the party.
The discontent is also understood to have roots in demands raised by legislators from the Pir Panjal region, who had sought the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary. However, the demand was not acted upon during the recent reshuffle.
The legislators are now demanding the removal of Nasir Aslam Wani, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and others.

The political fallout of Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi’s exit from the National Conference and its possible impact on the party’s electoral constituencies also figured in the discussions.
A legislator from the Pir Panjal region has been appointed as the convenor of the forum, sources said, indicating an attempt by the disgruntled legislators to give their collective demands an organised shape.
The meeting signals another challenge for the National Conference leadership, which is already facing internal questions over ministerial representation, the functioning of the government and its political approach towards the Centre.
