Tezpur Police on Saturday, arrested Kulendra Sharma, a resident of the Patiachuburi area on charges of spying for Pakistan agencies.
A senior police officer who does not want to be named said, “ Sharma served as Junior Warrant Officer at the Indian Air Force base in Salonibari, Tezpur, before retiring in 2002.He had served in Tezpur Air Force Station before retiring in 2002. After retirement he worked at Tezpur University.”
The officer said Sharma allegedly shared sensitive documents and information with Pakistan-based handlers through social media platforms.
Sonitpur Superintendent of Police Barun Purakayastha said that Sharma was arrested following intelligence inputs and would be produced before a Tezpur court on Sunday. “Electronic devices were seized during the arrest. Preliminary findings indicate the exchange of information with Pakistan intelligence operatives”.
Purakayastha said that some data appeared to have been deleted. A case had been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Arunachal Pradesh Police, on Saturday, arrested two more suspected spies, Hilal Ahmed from West Siang district and Ghulam Mohammad Mir from Changlang district both are natives of Jammu and Kashmir.A Police officer said they were part of a network shared information through a Telegram channel linked to Pakistani handlers. “They shared details of Army movements, locations of defence camps”.
Recently Arunachal police arrested two Pakistan-linked spies. Arunachal Pradesh Police arrested two more men from Jammu and Kashmir, namely Nazir Ahmad Malik and Sabir Ahmed Mir, both residents of Kupwara district. They were selling warm clothes in the area.
Police said these people had all the valid documents like Inner Line Permit (ILP).
Arunachal Pradesh shares an international border with China, Bhutan and Myanmar.
According to the FIR filed at Chimpu police station, the first accused, Nazir Ahmad Malik of the Kupwara district, was arrested on November 22 from a rented house in Ganga village near here, after police received ‘credible and actionable’ intelligence inputs.
Investigators further claim that Malik disclosed receiving instructions to place explosives and carry out arson targeting security establishments. Two mobile phones seized from him reportedly contained digital traces linking him to a Telegram channel named “Al AQSA”, described by police sources as a conduit for transmitting security-related information.
Acting on Malik’s statements, police arrested the second accused, Sabir Ahmed Mir, also from Kupwara, from Abotani Colony.
Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) Chukhu Apa, had confirmed the arrests however he declined to divulge further details, citing the sensitivity of the case.
