His new album is focused on heartbreak, melancholy and grief. In ‘Javelin’ the despairingly titled single ‘Will Anybody Ever Love Me?’ he talks about grief. He begs Jesus for deliverance from romantic despair in the song ‘Everything That Rises’. The centerpiece ‘Shit Talk’ depicts a relationship that hasn’t quite ended, but has run its course. The opener song ‘Goodbye Evergreen’ suddenly explodes into something epic and episodic. ‘A Running Start’ takes longer to transform, but by the end, it resembles something akin to the sunshine pop of the 1960s.

Earlier this year, Stevens talked about his Guillain-Barre diagnosis. In this neurological disorder, the body’s immune system attacks a portion of the peripheral nervous system. The singer said in a lengthy post on Tumblr, that he has been out of the promotional cycle for ‘Javelin’ because he has been in the hospital undergoing physical therapy to regain control over his body.

On Thursday, October 5, the singer wrote on Tumblr that he would “continue the work at home and in outpatient therapy.” In another Tumblr post, he thanked his fans for following his hospital blog.
