LAHORE:
Two students have developed a mobile application to help passengers of Punjab’s electric bus service access route and schedule information, addressing a common problem: commuters often struggle to find timely bus timing details.
Muhammad Ghayas, one of the developers, said the idea came to him after he waited at a bus stop for nearly half an hour to get to his hostel, only to discover that the last bus on that route had already departed. “After this experience, I decided, along with my colleague, to create a system that could provide timely information on bus routes and schedules to passengers,” he explained.
Ghayas said the app includes details of various electric bus routes, stops, and departure times. “If there is any change in a route or bus timing, users receive immediate notifications. The information is collected from publicly available internet data and presented in a simple and user-friendly way. The app also works offline, without internet access,” he added.

He further stated that the app has not been officially uploaded to the Play Store but is available via a website. “When we introduced the app on the social media platform Instagram, over 50,000 people viewed it within two days, and more than 500 users downloaded it,” he said.

The app’s co-developer, Rizwan Ali, noted that the project is currently in its initial stage and does not include a live bus tracking feature. “In the future, to include live tracking, cooperation with government authorities will be necessary,” he explained.
The students have also sought support from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the Punjab Transport Authority, and the Punjab Information Technology Board to further improve the app and provide services such as live bus locations.
“At this initial stage, the app includes routes from six to seven major cities. We are also receiving messages from users in other cities requesting their routes to be added,” they said.
