The Maharashtra authorities has formed a particular investigation group (SIT) headed by a senior police officer to conduct a probe into the alleged suicide of an 18-year-old scholar of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, a police official mentioned on Tuesday.

Darshan Solanki, who hailed from Ahmedabad in Gujarat and was a first-year scholar of B Tech (Chemical) course at the IITB, allegedly died by suicide by leaping off the seventh ground of a hostel constructing positioned on the campus on February 12.
His household had claimed he confronted discrimination at the IITB for belonging to a Scheduled Caste neighborhood and suspected foul play in his demise.
Gujarat Congress MLA and Dalit chief Jignesh Mevani had demanded a probe by the SIT into Solanki’s demise, terming the episode as ‘suspicious’.
On February 24, the federal government had ordered a probe into Solanki’s demise, the official mentioned.
The SIT, headed by Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Lakhmi Gautam, will revisit the case and report the statements of Solanki’s dad and mom, officers of the institute and college students who had been witness to the incident, he mentioned.
It may also conduct a probe into the allegations made by numerous scholar teams that Solanki confronted caste discrimination, he mentioned.
After Solanki’s demise, the Powai police right here had registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and recorded the statements of a number of individuals, together with IITB college students.
“Now, the SIT will conduct a probe into the case,” the official added.
A Mumbai Police group on February 16 visited Gujarat to report the statements of Solanki’s dad and mom.
