When Shazam! dropped again in 2019, it was a nice shock for followers of the superhero style and DCEU, given how darkish the different movies from the franchise had been. Shazam! labored, due to how gentle it was with its tone and remedy, and together with some goofy humour, had loads of heart. While the movie was about Billy Batson (Asher Angel) discovering his calling and changing into the titular hero Shazam at its core, the narrative noticed him looking for his organic dad and mom whereas discovering an unlikely gang that finally ends up changing into his new household. The sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods tries to increase the story of the youngsters who flip into superheroes once they utter the phrase “Shazam!”. But whereas it broadens the canvas, raises the stakes and doubles on the humour, it appears to have misplaced that heart that was distinctive to this title.
A lot has occurred since we final met Billy and his gang. The youngsters have grown; with some even questioning in the event that they’ll have to maneuver out of their foster house. Their alter-egos — the crime-fighting superheroes — have prompted loads of collateral harm and earned the nickname of The Philadelphia Fiascos. If what’s occurring on their private {and professional} entrance isn’t sufficient, the daughters of Atlas, Hespera (an excellent Helen Mirren), Kalypso (a criminally under-utilised Lucy Liu) and Anthea (an enthralling Rachel Zegler) raid Earth, as all the time, to wreck havoc. With Shazam, the wizard’s workers, a golden apple which doubles as a Pandora’s field, constructing a dome over Philadelphia, and a purpose to “take again” their powers from our heroes, they do what most of the villains in superhero movies do: destroy a metropolis.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods (English)
Director: David F. Sandberg
Cast: Zachary Levi, Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, Djimon Hounsou, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Rachel Zegler, Adam Brody
Runtime: 130 minutes
Storyline: Our titular hero and his foster siblings should combat the daughters of Atlas to save lots of the world, and in the end, come to phrases with their identities
While their antics are something however distinctive, what works is their critical, world-ending conduct that’s met with genuinely foolish and hilarious responses from our heroes. It’s the fixed circulation of jokes at their very own expense that softens the blow of Shazam! Fury of the Gods being a forgetful movie when in comparison with its superior predecessor. The movie, to its credit score, tries to construct a sub-plot out of Billy virtually turning 18 which could imply he must go away his new household. There’s additionally one other storyline of him making an attempt to maintain the staff collectively whereas everybody else desires to go their very own approach. But the movie doesn’t actually play to those tropes and as a substitute swarms us with an overload of info. Even if we low cost the stuffed exposition — courtesy of the daughters of Atlas — there’s nonetheless loads of information force-fed to kill time.
Unlike the first movie which concentrated extra on Billy’s journey, the sequel has his grownup persona (performed by the reliable Zachary Levi) stealing display screen area. But it’s the incongruity with their personalities that comes as an unwelcoming shock when they’re technically presupposed to be the similar individual internally. Shazam, in a single of a number of pop-culture references laced all through the movie, brings up the Fast and the Furious movies to level out the significance of household, however the sequel is a far cry from the bonding and relationships that made the 2019 movie distinctive. Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer), who will get the most time on-screen after Shazam, has his first tryst with romance. Billy, on the different hand, is affected by imposter syndrome. But all of these are milked for humour as a substitute of turning them into constructing blocks for his or her character arcs.

However, widening the canvas, regardless of its disadvantages, does come in useful to create bite-sized enjoyable moments. Like the magical carpet from Aladdin and The Cloak of Levitation from Doctor Strange, we get a magical pen christened Steve; a scene involving its goof-up transcribing a letter that’s learn out loud by Mirren’s character occurs to be one of the finest sequences in the movie. Speaking about the goofball humour, it’s sarcastically Djimon Hounsou’s Shazam that makes us chuckle the most. Similar to Shifu from Kung Fu Panda, Shazam, the final surviving member of the Council of Wizards, who bestowed his powers on Billy, is continually made to rethink his choice and so they collectively make up the most hilarious sequences.
With some sensible CGI which is visibly greater than the first movie, together with a quantity of movie references — even ones from the reverse camp — (learn: the MCU) and a few witty humour to wrap it up, Shazam! Fury of the Gods tries its finest to maintain us entertained. But while you’re made to seek out respite in unicorns munching skittles… you recognize the movie is in troubled waters. Completely misplaced in focus and doing little or no to push the franchise additional, the sequel is an unsatisfactory addition that comes shut to only being saved by its personal attraction. With DC’s cinematic journey up for a tender reboot, it’s unclear if we’ll get to see the shenanigans of Shazam and his household once more. But if that is going to be their swan track, they higher be able to face the fury of the followers!
