In December alone, Pushpa 2 grossed over Rs 1,450 crores in India, with its Hindi-dubbed version contributing a significant Rs 900 crores, setting a new benchmark as the highest-grossing Hindi film ever. The blockbuster’s performance lifted the entire box office, despite challenges presented by the rescheduling of key films and other underperforming releases earlier in the quarter.
While Pushpa 2 undoubtedly stole the spotlight, regional cinema also played a crucial role in PVR Inox’s strong Q3 performance. The continued success of South Indian films was evident in the quarter’s box office results, especially with hits like Devara Part-1 and Vettaiyan, which dominated October’s earnings. Their strong performance reflected the growing reach and popularity of Tamil and Telugu films beyond their traditional audiences.
Even mid-budget regional films saw success, with Lucky Baskhar earning around Rs 90 crores and the Tamil film Amaran surpassing Rs 250 crores, cementing its place as the second highest-grossing Tamil film of the year.
In contrast, Bollywood struggled during the quarter, with Hindi and English films such as Jigra and Joker 2 failing to meet expectations. Despite this, PVR Inox’s strong regional offerings and the spectacular success of Pushpa 2 provided the much-needed lift to the company’s overall performance for the third quarter of fiscal year 2024.
