The Defence Ministry said the missile was test-fired from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island at around 11.10 am and met all the stipulated objectives. The successful trial brings the system closer to induction into the armed forces, with the ministry stating that its induction has become imminent.
Pralay is expected to give the Army and Air Force an additional option for striking high-value military targets, including enemy airbases, command centres, radar installations and logistics infrastructure. Its combination of high speed, mid-course manoeuvrability and a substantial conventional warhead is intended to make it harder for an adversary’s air defence network to track and intercept.

Pralay missile speed: How it compares with BrahMos
One of Pralay’s key characteristics is its reported speed. Open-source estimates place the missile’s maximum velocity in the Mach 5 to Mach 6 range, compared with the BrahMos cruise missile’s maximum speed of approximately Mach 2.8. This would make Pralay roughly twice as fast as BrahMos, although the two systems have different flight profiles and operational roles.
BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile that uses a solid-fuel booster and a liquid-fuel ramjet engine to maintain high speed during its cruise phase. Pralay, in contrast, is a solid-propellant quasi-ballistic missile that follows a different trajectory and is designed to manoeuvre during flight.
The distinction is important: BrahMos is designed to fly at low altitudes, including sea-skimming profiles, while Pralay combines ballistic-missile speed with the ability to alter its flight path. The latter feature is intended to complicate an adversary’s calculations and interception efforts.
What is Pralay and how does its quasi-ballistic technology work?
Pralay is an indigenously developed, short-range, surface-to-surface missile designed to carry conventional warheads. Unlike a conventional ballistic missile that follows a largely predictable trajectory, a quasi-ballistic missile can change its path during flight.
Pralay uses a manoeuvrable re-entry vehicle and advanced guidance and navigation systems to make mid-course trajectory adjustments. This reduces the predictability of its flight path and can make it more difficult for enemy air defence systems to calculate its impact point and launch an effective interception.
The missile is powered by a solid-propellant rocket motor and can be launched from a mobile launcher. Its mobility allows the armed forces to move and position the system according to operational requirements.

Pralay missile range and payload capacity
Pralay has a reported operational range of 150 to 500 km and can carry conventional warheads weighing between 500 kg and 1,000 kg.
The missile’s range varies according to the weight of the payload. With a heavier warhead of around 1,000 kg, it can strike targets at approximately 350 km. With a lighter payload of around 500 kg, its reach can extend to 500 km.
The missile can be configured with different conventional warheads for different target requirements. These include high-explosive fragmentation and penetration-cum-blast options, as well as runway-denial payloads designed to damage airfield infrastructure.
This combination of range, payload flexibility and precision guidance gives the armed forces an option for engaging important military installations beyond the reach of conventional artillery.
Pralay missiles to form part of India’s planned Rocket Force
Pralay is expected to play a central role in India’s proposed Rocket Force, a dedicated conventional missile formation being planned to strengthen the country’s precision-strike capabilities. The concept is broadly comparable to China’s Rocket Force in its emphasis on specialised missile-based military capabilities, although the structure and responsibilities of India’s proposed force would be determined separately.
Reports indicate that the armed forces have approved the procurement of around 370 Pralay missiles. The planned inventory includes an initial requirement of 120 missiles for the Indian Air Force and a further 250 for the Army, which is expected to raise dedicated Pralay missile regiments.
Pralay is expected to operate alongside BrahMos as one of the principal conventional strike systems associated with the proposed force. While BrahMos provides a high-speed cruise missile capability, Pralay adds a quasi-ballistic option with a heavier payload and a range of up to 500 km.
A dedicated Rocket Force would give India another layer of conventional deterrence, allowing it to engage important targets without necessarily relying on aircraft or longer-range strategic missile systems. However, the proposal should be distinguished from a formally established force and its final organisational structure.

Who developed the Pralay missile?
The missile was developed by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories. Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), one of the programme’s development-cum-production partners, has manufactured the system.
The November 5 trial was conducted in the presence of senior DRDO officials, representatives from the defence industry and members of the armed forces. The Defence Ministry said data collected by instruments deployed by the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur confirmed that all test objectives had been achieved.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the armed forces and industry partners, describing the successful trial as another milestone in strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities.
What happens after the successful user evaluation trial?
User evaluation trials assess whether a weapon system meets the operational requirements of the armed forces before it is inducted into service. The November 5 test is therefore an important step towards Pralay’s deployment.
With the Defence Ministry stating that induction has become imminent, the missile is moving closer to joining the operational inventory. Its eventual deployment will expand India’s conventional precision-strike options and strengthen the country’s efforts to build a larger indigenous missile capability.
