Pakistan’s missile supplier Türkiye now has a hypersonic missile: All about Tayfun Block 4

Türkiye, a close defense partner of Pakistan, has unveiled its first hypersonic ballistic missile — the Tayfun Block 4 — at the International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025 held in Istanbul on July 22. Developed by Turkish defense contractor Roketsan, the missile weighs 2,300 kilograms, is 6.5 meters long, and boasts a range of 800 kilometers.

Announcing the launch, Roketsan said in a post on X (formerly Twitter):

“On the first day of #IDEF2025, we unveiled six new systems that will further strengthen the power of our defense industry. Each system, developed through national engineering and indigenous capabilities, reflects the level we have reached in generating advanced technologies and integrating them into the field. With our next-generation systems, we continue to advance confidently toward a fully independent Türkiye across land, sea, air, and space.”

What We Know About Tayfun Block 4

Roketsan described the Tayfun Block 4 as a high-speed, highly maneuverable missile capable of targeting strategic assets deep within enemy territory.

“The Tayfun Block-4 achieves long ranges, setting another record for the Turkish defense industry. Weighing over 7 tons, this new version of the Tayfun, with its multi-purpose warhead, will be capable of destroying numerous strategic targets — including air defense systems, command and control centers, military hangars, and other critical facilities — from kilometers away,” Roketsan said in an official statement.

What Are Hypersonic Missiles?

Hypersonic ballistic missiles are a class of weapons that combine the characteristics of traditional ballistic missiles with hypersonic speeds and in-flight maneuverability. These missiles travel at speeds greater than Mach 5 (approximately 6,100 km/h or 3,800 mph), making them extremely difficult to detect, track, or intercept using conventional missile defense systems.
With this development, Türkiye has joined an elite group of nations — including the United States, Russia, and China — that have successfully developed hypersonic missile technology.

What About India?

India, in collaboration with Russia, is working on a next-generation hypersonic cruise missile known as BrahMos-II. This successor to the original BrahMos missile is designed to reach speeds between Mach 7 and Mach 8 and have a range of up to 1,500 kilometers. Once operational, it will significantly enhance India’s strike capabilities in the hypersonic domain.
