The Indian government has announced a change in schedule for its civil defence exercise, Operation Shield. Initially planned for May 29, the country-wide mock drill will now take place on May 31, 2025. The rescheduled operation will be conducted in states and union territories along the India-Pakistan border, including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, and Chandigarh.

Understanding Operation Shield

Earlier this month, India conducted a similar drill under the banner of Operation Abhyaas on May 7, 2025, covering over 240 districts across the country. That exercise was launched in response to growing tensions with Pakistan following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam.

While Operation Abhyaas was largely successful, it did reveal several gaps in emergency response systems, particularly in rural areas. As a result, the Home Ministry issued a directive on May 9 mandating corrective action. Funds were allocated through the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to support upgrades in civil defence readiness.
