MUMBAI: Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences under the Krishna Vishwa Vidyapeeth (a deemed university) in Karad recently lost the approval of the National Medical Commission (NMC) for 50 seats that were added last year.
The commission’s portal mentions that the renewal proposal of the seats was disapproved for non-cooperation with the assessment team. The college offered 200 seats till 2021. The same number of seats are shown available for the counselling round in the seat matrix released this weekend for deemed universities.
A college official claimed that the NMC’s assessment team paid a surprise visit to the campus on a local public holiday. “Since the office was shut, we requested the team to visit on a working day. The team gave a negative comment and the approval to the additional 50 seats given last year was stayed. But we have made an appeal for a fresh inspection, and they have agreed. We are waiting for the NMC team to visit the college again,” said the official.
With the Directorate General Health Services’ (DGHS) Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) starting the choice-filling process for the counselling round for deemed universities from Saturday, the Karad deemed university will only have 200 seats for aspirants in the first round. The college official said if approval for the 50 seats in question is received after re-inspection, those will be added in the subsequent rounds.
Admissions to a private college in Dhule, ACPM College, had come under a similar cloud when the NMC’s inspection team paid a surprise visit in 2021-22, again during a local holiday. The team had also found deficiencies in the college’s and attached hospital’s infrastructure. After court cases and a fresh inspection, the MBBS seats were recognised by the NMC.
The choice filling process for MCC for admissions to deemed universities was supposed to commence on Friday, but got delayed by a day.
