NEW DELHI: In a move aimed at improving the quality of medical education in India, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has implemented new regulations capping the intake of MBBS students in recently established medical colleges. These regulations, outlined in the Under Graduate Minimum Standards Regulations (UG-MSR) 2023, limit the batch size to a maximum of 150 students.
Previously, there was no specific cap on the number of MBBS students a new medical college could admit. This, in some cases, led to large class sizes, potentially hindering the quality of education and practical training for medical students. The NMC’s revised regulations aim to address this concern by establishing a more manageable student-to-faculty ratio.
Focus on Quality Over Quantity
Medical experts believe this new regulation is a positive step towards enhancing the learning experience for future doctors. A smaller batch size allows for more personalized attention from professors and instructors. Students have greater opportunities for hands-on training in laboratories and clinical settings, leading to a more well-rounded medical education.
“Reduced batch sizes allow for improved faculty-to-student interaction and personalized learning,” says a statement released by the NMC. “This fosters a more productive learning environment for students and ensures they graduate with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their medical careers.”
Flexibility in Intake Numbers
The UG-MSR 2023 regulations offer some flexibility for new medical colleges. While the maximum intake is capped at 150 students, colleges can choose a lower student body if they meet specific criteria. Institutions with a fully functional hospital with at least 220 beds and a faculty with qualified personnel in all clinical departments can start with a batch size as low as 50 students.
Maintaining Population Needs
The NMC has also established a minimum requirement for the number of MBBS seats per state, following a ratio of 100 seats for every 10 lakh (one million) residents. This ensures there are enough medical graduates to meet the healthcare needs of the population. States with larger populations would have a higher number of allocated MBBS seats, while smaller states could have fewer.
Impact on Existing Medical Colleges
It’s important to note that these regulations apply only to new medical colleges established from the 2024-25 academic session onwards. Existing medical colleges with larger batch sizes are not mandated to reduce their intake. However, the NMC’s focus on quality education in medicine may encourage them to re-evaluate their student-to-faculty ratio in the future.
