Hyderabad: Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) aims to recruit faculty and train specialists in immune-related transplant procedures — an area critical for addressing rare genetic immune disorders. Faculty members shared this vision during the 7th International Conference on Inborn Errors of Immunity held in Hyderabad on Saturday.
Dr Liza Rajasekhar, professor and head of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at NIMS, emphasized the shortage of trained specialists in this field. “Immune-related diseases often arise from genetic mutations, where a missing or extra gene copy can lead to serious disorders. Such conditions can manifest as autoimmunity, autoinflammation, or malignancies. Advances in medical science offer the potential to diagnose and treat these disorders through gene-based therapies,” she explained.
She further highlighted the importance of expanding the number of qualified specialists to meet the growing need for immune-related transplants. Experts also underscored the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach to ensure timely diagnosis and effective interventions in genetic disorders.
Telangana Health Secretary Christina Z Chongthu assured attendees that the government would use insights from the conference to integrate immunodeficiency management into public health policies.
