The festival season goes from strength to strength this week with a multi-genre lineup of artistes performing to cap off the Zero1 Fest by Zerodha. While the conference side of the event with panel discussions and keynote speakers are a big draw in themselves, there’s plenty of music to add a different energy to the festival. The likes of hip-hop artiste Raftaar, pop singer-songwriter Lisa Mishra, Arunachal Pradesh’s singer-songwriter Taba Chake, Mumbai funk and nu-disco duo Madboy/Mink and singer-songwriter Aanchal Bordoloi will perform.
The comedy lineup as part of the Zero1 Fest will include the like of Abhishek Upmanyu, Kenny Sebastian and Urooj Ashfaq.

Described as “one of Europe’s most exciting contemporary jazz ensembles, Austrian septet Shake Stew present a special showcase set of their 2023 album, Lila, at Windmills in Whitefield this week. A description for the event states that the band is “known for their high-energy blend of groove jazz and Afrobeats”.
Since their debut at the Saalfelden Jazz Festival in 2016, Shake Stew have been repping modern jazz from Austria. The band’s lineup itself is an indication of their experimentation. Shake Stew has two drummers — Nikolaus Dolp and Christian Eberle, two bassists (bandleader Lukas Kranzelbinder and Oliver Potratz) and a horn section comprising three members — Yvonne Moriel on alto saxophone, Mario Rom on trumpet and Johannes Schleiermacher on tenor saxophone and flute. “The band creates an unmistakable sonic identity, fusing kraut-jazz, hypnotic rhythms, and deep grooves,” the description adds.

Tabla exponent, classical and fusion artiste Bickram Ghosh is curating, producing and directing a new set titled, Transformation, alongside artistes such as percussionist BC Manjunath, violinist Nandini Shankar, vocalist Anjana Padmanabhan, producer Mahesh Raghvan, drummer Pranav Dath and keyboardist Anay Gadgil.
The event description adds, “Transformation signifies Bickram’s artistic evolution, embracing a more electronic soundscape. This act also highlights the exciting trend of Indian instruments finding their electric counterparts — the electric sitar, sarod, violin, veena and many more. This act serves as a testament to the evolving landscape of Indian classical music, showcasing its ability to seamlessly blend tradition with contemporary influences.”
Ghosh added on social media that the event is also driven by a charitable action. “This event will support a philanthropic cause by presenting a set of tablas to underprivileged children and arranging for music education for these children, amongst others,” he said on Instagram.

On the back of playing big stages such as Bandland in Bengaluru last year and most recently, Lollapalooza India in Mumbai last week, New Delhi rock artiste Raman Negi brings his latest album Chaltey Purzay to the city. After these festivals, Negi is playing in a club setting this time around as part of his album launch tour, which kicks off in Bengaluru.
He said in a post on social media, “First gig of the Chaltey Purzay tour is getting closer! And the excitement is mixed with heebie-jeebies.” The setlist includes songs off the new album as well as Negi’s first album, Shakhsiyat, although he says the renditions will be “like you have never heard before.” He added in another post about performing in the city, “Last time we played was amazing and I’m stoked to bring the full album to you.”

Wild Wild Women

The second week of the ongoing Women’s History Month Festival at Indian Music Experience museum’s performance theatre brings in a diverse lineup over the weekend. On March 15, Mumbai hip-hop group Wild Wild Women will perform, fresh off their international debut shows in Germany. On March 16, the inimitable jazz vocalist Radha Thomas is expected to perform everything from standards to odes to the city and vocalese.
A press release for the event states, “Despite their profound impact, women’s contributions to Indian music often remain underrecognised. As India’s first interactive music museum, IME is committed to foregrounding these lesser-known narratives of women in music history. The Women’s History Month festival aims to illuminate their stories, celebrate their achievements, and acknowledge their enduring influence.”
