The report marks the fifth edition of the Rural Barometer, offering fresh insights into the evolving media landscape and consumer behaviour in rural India. It underscores a notable shift towards a blended media approach, driven by rising internet penetration and digital adoption in rural areas.
The findings reveal that digital and telecom platforms are providing significant incremental reach, particularly in Hindi-speaking regions. Rural consumers are increasingly embracing online platforms, making digital an essential component of effective media strategies for brands targeting this vast market segment.
“Telecom and digital channels are proving to be vital in reaching rural audiences, especially in regions where traditional media may have limited coverage,” the report states. “The trend towards hybrid media consumption highlights the need for a balanced strategy that combines both online and offline engagement.”
The report also highlights a surge in the use of digital services among rural users. Digital platforms for payments, e-commerce, and gaming have seen a significant rise in popularity, reflecting growing digital inclusion and financial literacy in rural communities.
In addition, rural online users are increasingly drawn to lifestyle-oriented content, including fashion, travel, and fitness. The findings from the Rural Barometer Report indicate that the digital transformation in rural India is well underway, offering brands a unique chance to connect with a rapidly growing and increasingly digital-savvy audience.
The report also highlights a significant 60% increase in the average FMCG basket size among rural consumers, rising from 5.8 in 2022 to 9.3 in 2024. This growth is attributed to an increasing preference for convenience products, reflecting changing lifestyles and enhanced purchasing power in rural areas.
Regional differences are evident, with states such as Jammu & Kashmir (39%), Maharashtra (41%), and Odisha (26%) witnessing moderate growth in FMCG basket sizes, despite fewer financial concerns. This positive trend in expanding FMCG consumption is supported by rising rural incomes and a diversification of income sources, including salaried employment.
The report also reveals a distinct disparity between rural residents reliant solely on agricultural income (19% of the population) and those with diverse income streams (81%). Those depending exclusively on agricultural income face greater financial stress, with 82% expressing concerns. In contrast, individuals with varied income sources show reduced financial stress and exhibit larger basket sizes.
Puneet Avasthi, Director of Specialist Businesses, Insights Division, Kantar, added: “The 2024 Rural Barometer Report illustrates rising purchasing power and evolving lifestyles among rural consumers, as evidenced by increased basket sizes and a preference for convenience products, despite ongoing financial concerns. Regional variations in financial resilience are influenced by the availability of diverse employment opportunities. We also observe a shift in rural media consumption towards a hybrid model of traditional and digital formats, though digital access remains uneven across different states.”
