New Delhi: Max Institute of Laparoscopic, Robotic, Bariatric Surgery and GI Surgery has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Intuitive Surgical to support structured adoption of robotic-assisted surgery and expand patient access across India.
Intuitive Surgical is a global technology company and a pioneer in robotic-assisted surgery.
The MoU was signed by Dr Pradeep Chowbey, Group Chairman of the Max Institute of Laparoscopic, Robotic, Bariatric Surgery and GI Surgery; David J Rosa, Chief Executive Officer of Intuitive Surgical; and Rohitt Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager, Intuitive India.
The collaboration will focus on strengthening surgeon capability, advancing structured training pathways and supporting the adoption of robotic-assisted surgery across both routine and complex procedures, the institute said in a statement.
Dr Chowbey said robotic-assisted surgery needs to move beyond selective use in complex cases and become part of routine surgical practice. “With appropriate training infrastructure and safety standards, robotic-assisted platforms can contribute to improving safety and efficiency even in commonly performed procedures,” he said.
The partnership will combine Intuitive’s global experience in robotic-assisted surgery with Max Institute’s clinical expertise to establish structured outcome benchmarks for routine surgical procedures, according to the statement.
Rohitt Mahajan said the collaboration reflects a shared focus on patient outcomes through responsible adoption of minimally invasive care, structured training and close clinical collaboration.
The MoU also formalises collaboration in clinical research, with Max surgeons participating in Intuitive-led studies for approved indications, while Intuitive will support Max-led research in study design, analytics and publication.
The partnership also envisages the development of a Centre of Excellence to generate clinical and economic evidence on robotic-assisted surgery, aimed at supporting informed decision-making by healthcare systems and, over time, helping reduce financial barriers to patient access, the statement added.
