Mark Carney India Visit Live Updates: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. The Canadian PM is on an official visit to India aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between India and Canada, with discussions set to focus on trade, energy and artificial intelligence (AI).
Both Prime Ministers will hold talks on rebuilding bilateral relations, with key discussions centred on energy cooperation, trade expansion and progress on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Carney first landed in Mumbai, where he addressed business leaders before travelling to the national capital. During his visit to Delhi, he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
In a post on X, Carney said, “Arrived in New Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Modi. Canada and India are two confident and ambitious nations who want to build boldly together. We’re forging new partnerships in energy, talent and innovation, and AI – to create greater security and prosperity for our peoples.”
Meeting focus beyond bilateral issues
Apart from bilateral matters, the two leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and global developments. They will jointly attend the India-Canada CEOs Forum, aimed at aligning government policy with private sector growth.
The visit comes as both countries attempt to normalise ties after relations sharply deteriorated in June 2023 following the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada and the diplomatic standoff that followed.
