In a shocking incident, a video went viral on social media showing a woman in Maharashtra’s Ulhasnagar being beaten in public, stripped semi-naked, having her hair chopped off and paraded with a garland of slippers over a temple entry dispute.
Three people have been arrested in connection with the matter. Ulhasnagar ACP Shailesh Kale on Saturday said that the conflict stemmed from a dispute between two families from the same community over entry into a temple. Three people have been arrested in the case so far.
“The conflict arose from a dispute between two families of the same community regarding entry into a temple. Cases have been registered against members of both families involved in the dispute,” he said.

According to The Indian Express, the woman and the accused are balloon sellers belonging to the Vaghri community and have registered cases against each other. The accused, who are the woman’s relatives, had barred her from entering the temple after accusing her of insulting their deities.
Shankar Avtade, Senior Inspector of Ulhasnagar Central police station, said the incident took place on Thursday in the Vitthal Wadi area of Ulhasnagar. Two accused were arrested on Friday, and another suspect was taken into custody on Saturday.
“In the current case, we have arrested three people seen roughing up the woman and are on the lookout for four others. We will also go through CCTV footage and record statements of those present to get clarity, as a lot of rumours are doing the rounds,” the officer was quoted as saying.
Videos of the incident showed the woman being assaulted in public while bystanders watched and recorded the scene on their mobile phones. Police said further investigation is underway.
The accused have been charged for voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace and other offences under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
