Lucknow: Doctors at the nephrology department of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) led an awareness-cum-education rally on World Kidney Day, stressing that some 850 million people in the world suffer from kidney disease due to various reasons.
“CKD is the cause of death for at least 2.4 million people every year and is now the sixth fastest-growing cause of death. It is estimated that by 2040, it will become the fifth leading cause of death,” Prof Narayan Prasad told the attendees.
He said that in addition to CKD, acute kidney injury (AKI) was a major cause of death, affecting more than 13 million people worldwide, and is most prevalent in low and middle-income countries. In fact, in children, CKD and AKI cause substantial morbidity and mortality during childhood but also lead to other medical problems.
SGPGI director Prof RK Dhiman, CMS Dr Devendra Gupta, MS Dr Prashant Agarwal and senior faculty members of the nephrology department, Dr Anupama Kaul, Dr Manas Ranjan Patel, Dr Manas Ranjan Behera, Dr Ravi Shankar Kushwaha, Dr Atul and Dr R Harshvardhan and president of state organ and tissue transplant organisation (SOTTO), UP, also participated in this programme.
