Allegations of Political Conspiracy
The Congress’s assertion that Kavitha’s arrest was a politically motivated move by the BJP and BRS to gain an advantage in the elections has been met with strong denials from the ruling parties. However, the timing of the arrest, coming just before the election schedule was to be announced, has raised suspicions among opposition leaders.Telangana Congress senior vice-president G Niranjan alleged that the BJP, as part of a secret deal, was trying to give a fresh lease of life to the BRS in Lok Sabha polls.
“This is a drama hatched by BJP and BRS. This was done with an intention to create sympathy in favour of the BRS in the Lok Sabha elections,” Niranjan alleged.

The arrest of a prominent BRS leader like Kavitha has dealt a blow to the party, which was already facing challenges due to the defection of key members. The BJP, on the other hand, stands accused of using the ED to target its political opponents, a charge it vehemently denies.Former BRS minister T Harish Rao has labeled the arrest of MLC K Kavitha as a “political conspiracy” orchestrated by both the BJP and the Congress to undermine the BRS ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. Rao announced that the party will stage protests and demonstrations across all assembly constituencies in the state to voice their opposition to Kavitha’s arrest. He questioned the urgency behind the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) actions, especially when the matter was scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court on March 19. Rao, along with former minister Jagadish Reddy, criticized the ED for its apparent haste in arresting Kavitha, suggesting a political motive behind the move.
“Earlier, they said that they were only carrying out a search but later in the evening, they arrested her. They even booked flight tickets to return to Delhi with her. It clearly shows the motive with which they came,” Harish Rao alleged while also questioning how the ED could arrest a woman after 6.30 pm when it is clear that she cannot approach the courts for bail as the courts are on holiday on Saturday and Sunday. “The issue of whether the ED can arrest a woman was debated in West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s case and also Nalini Chidambaram’s case. Why has the ED shown such haste in arresting Kavitha?” he questioned.
Protests and Backlash
Kavitha’s arrest has sparked protests and demonstrations across the state, with BRS supporters condemning the move as politically motivated. The Congress has vowed to continue its fight against what it sees as a conspiracy to undermine the democratic process.
Protesting BRS workers shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was incidentally in Hyderabad for a road show, alleging that the ED was being used for political purposes.
“Khabardaar Narendra Modi. BJP down, down,” the workers shouted as they squatted near the resilience.
“The arrest of Kavitha by the ED is an attempt by the BJP to weaken BRS. We are sure Kavitha will come out clean in the case. The arrest before polls is a proof of vendetta politics,” former minister Satyavathi Rathod said.
Legal and Political Ramifications
The legal battle over Kavitha’s arrest is likely to drag on, with her supporters claiming that the ED violated its own procedures in arresting her. The political fallout, however, could be more significant, as parties scramble to adjust their strategies in light of these developments.
The primary allegation against Kavitha is her involvement in the ‘South Lobby’, where she is accused of collaborating with AAP leaders in Delhi to devise an excise policy favoring specific companies. Additionally, she is accused of maintaining benami investments in Indospirits, a company implicated in the alleged scam. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleges that kickbacks amounting to Rs 100 crore were transferred from Hyderabad to Delhi through hawala channels.
Kavitha’s arrest has injected a new level of uncertainty into Telangana’s political arena, with the fallout likely to be felt long after the election dust settles. The accusations of political conspiracy and manipulation have further polarized an already divided electorate, setting the stage for a fiercely contested election.
As officials led her away in a car, former minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy told Kavitha that they were ensuring her safe passage. He also told local police and ED officials that there would be no hindrance to them.
