Every day, Allociné recommends a film to (re) see on TV. Tonight: Jonathan Cohen and Julien Doré members of a metal group in a crazy comedy.
Jonathan Cohen is today an essential actor in hexagonal laughter (even if he has been completely erased from a film). But do you remember one of his very first films, Pop Redemption, a crazy comedy in which he is a member of a Black Metal group alongside a golden julien as a satanic singer? If this is not the case, then see this Tuesday evening on TF1 Movies series!
Released in theaters in 2013, the very successful film of Pop Redemptions, with his absurd humor and his quality writing (a certain Alexandre Astier collaborated in the script), tells the story of the Dead Makabés, a group of Black Metal which, every summer, has been paid since adolescence what he pretentiously calls a “summer tour”, namely some concerts in festivals of the depths of Europe. But for these four friends, the crisis of the thirties and this week of recreation may well be the last …
The idea of starting from Pop Redemption came to director Martin Le Gall by seeing an advertising campaign for Eurostar, which showed the looks of Freddie Mercury, Beatles or Elton John with the slogan “London at a discount”. “I was especially intrigued by the false beatles who looked a little pathetic and I wondered what their life could look like”he said. “I then imagined that they had to be a metal group on the run! What I liked, from the start was to make the big gap between pop and metal.”
With his cheating and absurd humor, his 70’s atmosphere and his necessarily explosive BO, Pop Redemption is a very refreshing comedy. To slip into the shoes of their characters, the actors were involved: Grégory Gadebois and Yacine Belhousse trained in the bass and guitar, while Julien Doré, yet already a singer at the base, had to learn the appropriate gestures to the genre of Black Metal. As for Jonathan Cohen, who was the only one who did not play any instrument in life, he had to put himself on drums!
Jonathan Cohen on stage after the Guns N ‘Roses!
For the anecdote, the actors-musicians of Pop Redemption interpreted their song three times on one of the two major exterior stages of the Hellfest, the prestigious French festival devoted to extreme music. A moment filmed after the passage on the said scene … Guns n ‘pink!
Want a funny and strong and decibels feel-good movie, with a Jonathan Cohen in one of his first films? So connect the amps and look quickly Pop redmption to fill up with energy!
