Jawan netted Rs 74.5 crore on its first day of sales, with Rs 65.5 crore coming from the Hindi version and the remaining Rs 9 crore from the dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. The film’s second-day net collection could be over Rs 50 crore across languages.
With receipts of Rs 57 crore, the YRF Spy Universe film Pathaan previously held the title of the biggest Hindi box office debut. Pathaan was released on January 25 this year.
The global gross collection for Jawan stood at Rs 130 crore–Rs 90 crore from India, and Rs 40 crore from overseas.
The data sourced from Sacnilk suggests that Jawan’s gross advance bookings for the second day for all languages and formats were about 750,000. It sold about 1.56 million tickets in the Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions on the first day.PVR Inox co-CEO Gautam Dutta said Jawan has been released at a time when consumers are flocking to cinemas in record numbers.“If the unprecedented audience response is anything to go by, we are confident that Jawan will not only be the biggest film of this year but will end up adding immense strength to the cinema ecosystem,” he said.The film industry had a phenomenal run in August, with a record box office collection of over Rs 1,000 crore on the back of Gadar 2, OMG 2, Jailer, Dream Girl 2, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
Sunny Deol starrer Gadar 2 has collected Rs 662 crore in box office collections globally. Rajinikanth starrer Jailer’s global sales stand at Rs 593 crore. OMG-2, which features Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi in key roles, has so far mopped up Rs 218 crore. The box office earnings are based on Sacnilk data.
PVR Inox had stated that August was its single biggest box office month of all time, with a gross box office revenue of Rs 532 crore across its theatres in the country.
“With the enormous opening day for Jawan and a spate of movies like Tiger 3, Animal, and Dunki releasing in the next quarter, it looks like Bollywood has enough ammunition up its sleeve to deliver a sizeable number of blockbusters for this financial year. Add to that a slew of movies from down south like Salaar, which could further add fuel to the movie mania this year. All in all, FY 23–24 will end on a very high note for Indian movies,” said Nitin Menon, managing partner of NV Capital, a private credit fund.
In a recent report, Elara Capital SVP Karan Taurani noted that Jawan’s lifetime net box office collection will be in the range of Rs 350 crore to Rs 450 crore, with the film expected to breach the upper end of the guidance if the content appeals to audiences.
Taurani also stated that the back-to-back hits in recent weeks have come as a major respite for the Hindi film industry. “The multiplex industry will reach pre-Covid level occupancy in Q2 FY24. The average occupancy levels in July and August were 30% and are expected to be in a similar range in September,” he added.
Until Friday, Jawan had clocked ticket sales of 3.2 million on BookMyShow. With advance ticket sales of 1.6 million, Jawan is the biggest Shah Rukh Khan film in terms of advance sales, the platform stated.
BookMyShow COO – Cinemas Ashish Saksena noted that over a third of Jawan’s ticket sales have come from single-screen theatres. Ticket sales have picked up for all languages, he said.
“What is interesting to note is that the Hindi language version of the film has specifically seen tremendous interest from markets across the south and east India such as Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai, even as other metros and non-metros across the country, including Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Pune, Coimbatore, and Bhubaneswar, are propelling the pace for advance sales,” he said.
Produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and co-written and directed by Atlee, Jawan has reportedly been made on a budget of Rs 300 crore. The movie’s star cast also includes Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara and Sanya Malhotra.
