India’s Integrated Air Defence Weapon System clears maiden flight test

India has successfully carried out the maiden flight tests of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) off the coast of Odisha, informed the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Sunday.

The flight trials were conducted around 12.30 pm on Saturday, August 23, 2025, marking a major milestone in the nation’s ongoing efforts to develop an indigenous multi-layered air defence shield.

The IADWS is designed as a multi-tiered air defence solution capable of countering aerial threats ranging from fighter aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to cruise missiles and precision-guided munitions. The system integrates:

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took to X to laud the achievement, congratulating DRDO, the Indian Armed Forces, and industry partners for their role in developing the system.

“I congratulate DRDO, India Armed forces and Industry for successful development of IADWS. This unique flight test has established the multi-layered air-defence capability of our country and is going to strengthen area defence for important facilities against enemy aerial threats,” he wrote in a post on his official handle on Sunday.

The successful test comes close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day announcement of “Mission Sudarshan Chakra”, a project to develop an indigenous air-defence system inspired by Lord Krishna’s mythological weapon.

The initiative aims to reduce India’s dependence on imported technologies while ensuring a decisive response to emerging threats from adversaries like Pakistan and China.

The renewed focus on indigenisation underscores New Delhi’s determination to build a self-reliant defence ecosystem.

From the Operation Sindoor strikes earlier this year, carried out with homegrown platforms, to new initiatives like IADWS and Mission Sudarshan Chakra, India is steadily ramping up its capability to neutralise threats independently.

In his Red Fort address, the Prime Minister also urged innovators and the domestic defence industry to develop jet engines within the country, noting that strategic autonomy requires India to cut reliance on foreign suppliers.

His remarks came amid delays in the HAL-GE Aerospace engine partnership and the long-pending Kaveri engine project, which has been in the works since 1989 but is yet to be completed despite an investment of over Rs 2,000 crore.
