In India, the skill one needed to do the same job in 2015 has changed by 40 per cent as of today, and is projected to change by 70 per cent by 2030, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) changing a lot in jobs, Ryan Roslansky, Chief Executive Officer of LinkedIn, said.
Roslansky was speaking at the India Leadership Summit of US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) in New Delhi on Monday. “In India, if you take the same exact role or the same job title that exists today and compare it to 2015, the skill that is necessary to do that job has changed by 40 per cent from 2015. We project that it will change by 70 per cent by 2030. Whether you are changing your job or not, the job is changing around you,” the LinkedIn CEO said.
Roslansky said AI has made upskilling very important. “Take your current job, and do not think about it as a job title, but see it as a set of tasks that need to be done. When you understand those tasks, you can understand the ability of AI to automate those tasks. If you discover that your job is just a set of automated tasks, you need to start looking for a new job,” said Roslansky, who heads one of the world’s largest hiring platform which is a global haunt for job-seekers.
THREE PIECES OF ADVICE
As advice to youngsters, Roslansky said three things matter. “The most important skill that matters is learning how to learn, and adaptability. When some new tools come out, such as ChatGPT, just learn it and play with them. Number two, don’t forget the human component, empathy, compassion and ethical judgement. These are critically important. AI is not going to take over everything. So, if you think you are really strong in some of those human skills, you can have a real competitive advantage,” the LinkedIn CEO said.
He said youngsters should also try to apply the new technologies available to solve the problems of climate change, healthcare and disease. “There are now technologies which can, for the first time in history, solve these problems on a different level. Use them to make a better world as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Dream bigger what this tech can mean for you and the world,” Roslansky said.
The younger generation is entering a world that is brimming with unbelievable technology and change, and it is a once in the world opportunity, the LinkedIn CEO said.
AI ALSO MEANS OPPORTUNITY
The LinkedIn CEO said AI is going to change a lot in our jobs, but that change will also bring along a lot of opportunities. “Just as the industrial revolution brought about new roles that the farmer of the 18th century could never imagine. So will AI create opportunities that those in this room cannot imagine today. AI can be used to increase productivity, can be used to increase the labour pool. But it is scary in certain times,” Roslanky said.
He said LinkedIn has a digital map of 1.1 billion professionals, 65 million companies and 20 million jobs at any given time. “It is a vibrant graph, and gives us real-time insight into what is happening across the global labour market,” the LinkedIn CEO said.
