Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee sparked controversy by threatening the chief election commissioner during a protest, criticising his behavior towards Mamata Banerjee.

Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee triggered controversy after making a remark about the chief election commissioner during a protest in Kolkata.
Addressing supporters at a “Dharna Mancho”, Banerjee referred to an incident involving West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said, “CEC behaved very badly with Mamata Banerjee, if he would not have been CEC, I would have cut his finger that day.”
Earlier, on March 1, Banerjee has raised concerns over delays in resolving cases linked to voter list revisions in West Bengal, saying lakhs of matters are still pending despite directions from the Supreme Court of India.
Speaking to reporters, Banerjee said nearly 60 lakh cases related to the voter list are awaiting adjudication. He pointed out that the Supreme Court had, on February 21, directed the appointment of adjudicating officers at the level of judges to deal with these cases. However, he said the process has not moved forward.
“There are 60 lakh cases under adjudication. Although on February 21st, the Supreme Court directed the appointment of adjudicating officers at the judge level to address these matters… As of today, 10 days have passed since that directive, but not a single adjudication has taken place. This needs to be done urgently, daily, and must be informed and uploaded regularly,” Banerjee said.
The statement came shortly after the Election Commission of India released the final electoral roll following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in the state. According to the Commission, 5,46,053 voters were removed using Form 7 after the draft electoral roll was issued in December 2025.
Following the revision exercise, the total number of voters in West Bengal stands at 7,04,59,284 (7.04 crore), compared to 7,66,37,529 (7.66 crore) before the revision. This reflects a reduction of over 61 lakh names in the electoral roll.
