Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Email

Who Needs This Service?

Any Indian citizen who has been a victim of a cognizable offence (theft, cybercrime, missing person, vehicle theft, etc.) and wants to report it without visiting a police station can use state police online FIR or e-Complaint portals. This service is also available for non-cognizable offence complaints, depending on the state.

Required Documents

  • Aadhaar Card (for identity verification / OTP-based login on most portals)
  • Mobile number linked to Aadhaar (for OTP)
  • Email ID (for complaint acknowledgement)
  • Details of the incident: date, time, location, description
  • Supporting evidence (optional but recommended): photos, screenshots, transaction IDs for cyber fraud
  • Vehicle Registration Number (for vehicle theft FIR)
  • Bank account details / transaction reference (for financial fraud complaints)

Online Application Process (Step-by-Step)

How to File Online FIR on State Police Portals (2026)

A. National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (for Cyber Crimes — All States)

Official URL: https://cybercrime.gov.in Managed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

  1. Go to https://cybercrime.gov.in
  2. Click “File a Complaint” on the homepage.
  3. Accept the terms and conditions → Click “Report Cyber Crime Related to Women/Children” or “Report Other Cyber Crime” as applicable.
  4. Click “Citizen Login” → Enter your mobile number → Receive OTP → Verify.
  5. Fill in personal details: Name, Father’s/Husband’s name, Address, District, State, PIN.
  6. Click “Next” → Select category of crime: Financial Fraud, Social Media Crime, Hacking, etc.
  7. Fill in incident details: Date of incident, platform used, amount lost (if financial), suspect details (if known).
  8. Upload supporting documents (screenshots, bank statements, transaction IDs).
  9. Review the form → Click “Submit”.
  10. Note the Acknowledgement Number displayed on screen. An SMS and email confirmation will be sent.

Note: Complaints on this portal are forwarded to the concerned state police cyber cell for investigation.

Important: Online FIR is typically available only for specified cognizable offences (e.g., theft, vehicle theft, lost documents). For offences involving violence, murder, rape, or serious crimes, you must visit the police station physically to file an FIR under Section 173 of BNSS 2023 (formerly Section 154 CrPC).

C. General Steps Common to Most State Portals

  1. Visit the official state police website (links above).
  2. Navigate to “Citizen Services” or “e-Services” section.
  3. Click “Online FIR” or “Lodge Complaint”.
  4. Register using your mobile number → Enter OTP.
  5. Select the type of complaint/offence from dropdown.
  6. Enter incident details: Date, Time, Location (district, police station area), Description.
  7. Add accused/suspect details if known.
  8. Upload supporting documents.
  9. Review and submit.
  10. Download or note the FIR/Complaint Number for future reference.

Offline Process (Visit Police Station)

If the online portal does not accept your complaint type, or you face technical issues, visit the nearest police station:

  • Ask for the Duty Officer or SHO (Station House Officer).
  • Provide a written complaint or give it verbally (police must record it).
  • Under Section 173 of BNSS 2023, police are legally obligated to register an FIR for cognizable offences.
  • If police refuse, you can approach the Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district or file a complaint via the state police portal’s complaint against police section.
  • You can also send a complaint by post/registered letter to the SP or Commissioner of Police.
  • In case of further refusal, approach the Judicial Magistrate under Section 175 of BNSS 2023.

District SP Office: Available on your state police website under “Contact Us” → District-wise contacts.

How to Check FIR / Complaint Status

National Cyber Crime Portal:

  • Go to https://cybercrime.gov.in
  • Click “Track Your Complaint” on the homepage.
  • Enter your Registered Mobile Number and OTP.
  • View complaint status, assigned officer details, and updates.

State Police Portals:

  • Go to the same portal where you filed the complaint.
  • Click “Track Complaint” or “Check Status” under Citizen Services.
  • Enter your Complaint/FIR Number and registered mobile number.
  • Some portals send SMS updates automatically as status changes.

Via SMS (select states):

  • UP Police: SMS FIR <FIR Number> to 56070
  • Delhi Police: Track via portal login or SMS alerts on registered number

Common Problems and Solutions

1. OTP Not Received

  • Cause: Network issue, wrong mobile number, or DND activated.
  • Solution: Check that the mobile number is correct. If DND is active, OTP may not arrive via SMS. Wait 2–3 minutes and retry. Use “Resend OTP” option. If problem persists, try a different browser or clear cache.

2. Portal Not Loading / Error 503

  • Cause: Server overload or maintenance.
  • Solution: Try accessing during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening). Clear browser cache and cookies. Use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Avoid using Internet Explorer.

3. Complaint Type Not Available Online

  • Cause: Only certain offences are eligible for online FIR.
  • Solution: Visit the nearest police station for offences not listed online (assault, fraud by known person, domestic violence, etc.). Check the helpline to confirm eligibility.

4. Aadhaar OTP Verification Failing

5. Complaint Submitted But No Acknowledgement Received

  • Cause: Email/SMS delivery failure or portal glitch.
  • Solution: Login to the portal again and check under “My Complaints” — the complaint may have been recorded. Take a screenshot of the submission confirmation page at the time of filing. Contact the state police helpline with your registered mobile number for confirmation.

State-Wise Variations to Know

  • Cognizable offences eligible for online FIR vary by state. Delhi allows online FIR for theft and lost documents; UP allows it for additional categories via UPCOP app.
  • Some states require Aadhaar-based eKYC; others only need a mobile number and OTP.
  • Cyber crime complaints for all states are best filed via the central portal cybercrime.gov.in, regardless of which state you are in.
  • States like Maharashtra and Karnataka have dedicated Women’s Helpline Portals linked to the main police portal for gender-based crime complaints.
  • Under BNSS 2023 (which replaced CrPC from July 1, 2024), electronic filing of FIR has received stronger legal backing across all states.

Quick Summary Checklist Before You File

  • Incident must be a cognizable offence or cyber crime
  • Mobile number active and (for some portals) linked to Aadhaar
  • All incident details ready (date, time, location, description)
  • Supporting evidence/documents ready to upload
  • Note your complaint/FIR number after submission
  • Screenshot or download the acknowledgement immediately

This information is compiled from official government sources including cybercrime.gov.in (Ministry of Home Affairs), state police official websites, and BNSS 2023 provisions, as of February 2026. Portal features and links may change. Always verify on the official state police website or cybercrime.gov.in before filing. For urgent matters, call 112 or 100 immediately.
