Porvorim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday assured the House that he will try his level best to ensure that candidates answering the NEET examination are not inconvenienced and they can answer it from a centre within Goa itself.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai had pointed out that Goan students have to go out of the state to appear for the exam.
Sardesai, in his zero-hour mention, said, “There is fear and anxiety in the minds of parents and students answering the exam with regards to the allotment of examination centres in other states.”
Sardesai said that out of the 300 Goan students answering the NEET exam, 100 will appear for the exam in Goa while the remaining have to appear from different centres including Hyderabad, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh.
“Similar issue was in the news in Kerala. All MPs there called on the Union minister for health and BJP national president J P Nadda. Former MP Rajeev Chandrashekar also intervened in the matter. They got assurance that students from Kerala could appear for exams in centres within Kerala,” Sardesai said.
Sardesai urged the chief minister to activate the central engine and meet Nadda to ensure that Goan students can answer examinations in the state itself.
Sawant said the issue was brought to his notice on Monday by ministers Nilkant Halarnkar and Subhash Phal Dessai. “I have written (to Nadda) and also spoken to him. I am trying at my level. Now it is too late. In Kerala, they had done it at an early stage,” Sawant said.
In another zero-hour mention, Mayem MLA Premendra Shet said, “The Goa Education Development Corporation (GEDC) employed counsellors and supervisors to serve as dedicated professionals in various high schools and higher secondary schools all over Goa. They serve as trusted confidants among students dealing with sensitive issues like sexual abuse, family crisis, anxiety, depression, and various other issues. I request the govt to kindly look into this matter considering their dedicated work towards student communities and institutions to enhance their present salary and, if possible, to regularise their services to safeguard the security in their job along with an age bar in the long run.”Responding to Shet, Sawant said, “Counsellors are doing a good job in govt and aided schools, and I appreciate it. We have just revised their salaries. I will check if there is anything else we can do for them.”
