Gmail users are worried their data could become the source of training Gemini AI model. Here’s what Google has said to ease those concerns.
Gmail offers AI features but is Gemini being trained on it?
Gmail is popular among billions who use the platform to send/receive mails and handle other third-party account sign ups. The company is going deep with its AI integration and that seems to have started a serious discussion about the prospect of your data being used to train its AI systems without taking your consent.
But Gmail has denied all these charges and assured users it does not use your Gmail data to train the Gemini AI model. The company has repeatedly talked about the privacy terms of its AI tools and in some cases the policies do mention use of some data but not the personal content.
Gmail Data Safe?
Gmail has been forced to issue this statement after a report by Malwarebytes claimed that some of the new AI tools in the platform are being used to train Gemini AI. However, Google has refuted those concerns by saying these tools are part of the smart feature package which is different from training the AI. The company says the AI smart features scan your emails to suggest changes or help you with quick replies.
If you are still not sure about its use, Google lets you disable them from settings and use Gmail in its original avatar sans the smartness. Many people have thought about the personal experience factor of Gemini involving their data being used to train the AI system, something Google has clearly denied.
Gmail Smart Features For AI: How To Turn It Off On Mobile And Desktop
On Mobile
- Go to Settings in Gmail
- Scroll down to General and look for Smart Features
- Press the toggle to turn off the feature
On Desktop
Again, the steps are similar and you can just go to Settings to disable the smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet as well. .
The company has introduced Gemini 3 and Nano Banana Pro AI image tool this month. The Pro version of the AI image tool promises a lot more for the users, including new powers and editing chops in tow. Google claimed that Gemini 3 gets improved reasoning and better accuracy with text renders.
