Former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba passed away on Saturday. He was 57.
On March 5, he was acquitted by the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court, following his arrest on May 9, 2014, in an alleged Maoist links case. He was released from jail on March 7.
A division bench of Justices Vinay Joshi and Valmiki SA Menezes set aside the life imprisonment sentence imposed on him and also acquitted five others accused in the case.
While Saibaba, Mahesh Kariman Tirki, Hem Keshavdatta Mishra, Pandu Pora Narote and Prashant Rahi were sentenced to life imprisonment, a sixth accused Vijay Tirki was sentenced to 10 years in jail by a special court in 2017.
Saibaba was an English professor at Delhi University’s Ram Lal Anand College, which he had joined back in 2003. He was suspended by the college in 2014 after being arrested by the Maharashtra police for suspected Maoist links.
