In an embarrassing moment for India, skipper Harmanpreet Singh was shown a yellow card during the clash against Belgium after the team was found to have 12 players on the field during play.
The incident occurred in the 11th minute when Harmanpreet was shown a yellow card. It was later clarified that India had 12 players on the field, resulting in a penalty for their skipper.
The yellow card meant Harmanpreet had to serve a five-minute suspension, with his absence extending into the opening minute of the second quarter.
Rule 2.2 of the hockey rulebook classifies the incident as an illegal or faulty substitution. In such cases, the umpires are required to stop play and hold the team skipper responsible.
The captain is then shown a personal penalty card, either a Green Card, resulting in a two-minute suspension, or a Yellow Card, carrying a minimum five-minute suspension.
The rule further states that the additional player, in this case Harmanpreet, must leave the field, while the team has to play with a reduced number of players for the duration of the skipper’s suspension.
Meanwhile, Harmanpreet’s last-gasp PC strike took the game into a shoot-out, but India finished eighth at the FIH World Cup after losing 3-4 to co-hosts Belgium in Wavre on Friday.
World No. 2 Belgium were leading 3-2 until the final minute when India earned a PC with just 26 seconds left on the clock. Harmanpreet made no mistake in converting it to force a shoot-out after the two teams were locked 3-3 in regulation time.
It was Harmanpreet’s eighth goal of the tournament.
In the shoot-out, Shilanand Lakra, Dilpreet Singh and Abhishek converted their attempts, but Harmanpreet and Sukhjeet Singh missed the mark as Belgium prevailed 4-3.
Tom Boon, Arthur de Sloover, Alexander Hendrickx and Roman Duvekot scored for Belgium, while Victor Fourbert missed the target.
Abhishek had opened the scoring for India before Harmanpreet struck twice, while Duvekot, Hugo Labouchere and Nicolas de Kerpel scored in regulation time for Belgium.
