What is this trend about?
Joycore is about decorating with instinct rather than instruction. “Joycore is allowing a home to make you smile,” says Kirti Madan (Creative & Art Director, Mahima Group). “Colour and pattern play an important role, but the deeper idea is personal expression. It can be maximalist or restrained, as long as it evokes delight.”
While often associated with high-energy hues like tangerine, fuchsia, electric blue, and leaf green, it can also be softened by peach, butter yellow, lilac, and mint green. “The silhouettes are playful—curved armchairs, ball poufs, chequered rugs, and scalloped mirrors,” explains Punam Kalra (Creative Director, I’m the Centre for Applied Arts). “It feels like embracing the child in us.”
How to start?
1. Start with a happy colour palette
Pick two or three anchor colours that make you feel energised, like deep emerald green, sapphire blue, and rich magenta. Keep your walls neutral or a soft warm shade, and bring in bold colours through statement velvet armchairs, bright rugs, or an accent wall.
2. Style one corner at a time
Redoing an entire house feels overwhelming, so start small. Pick one nook—like a reading chair by the window—and layer it with colourful coffee table books, quirky ceramic vases, and a warm brass lamp.
3. Mix modern luxury with Indian roots
Blend high-end modern furniture with rich Indian textures. Throw brocade or embroidered silk cushions onto a sleek velvet couch, or pair brass urlis or modern Jaipur pottery with minimalist gold-framed art to give your home an international feel rooted in culture.
4. Bring in natural light and greenery
Bright colours look best in natural light. Keep window drapes light and breezy to let sunlight pour in, and add lush indoor plants in colourful painted pots to bring fresh energy.
5. The golden rule: Keep it intentional
The secret to dopamine decor is curation, not clutter. Every object should have a purpose or a memory attached to it so your space naturally turns into a place you never want to leave.
Why we are ditching ‘quiet luxury’
Minimalism often lacked the sensory stimulation needed in modern life. Madan notes that the movement is a reaction against “staged” homes: an inherited colourful cushion, a quirky lamp from a trip, or a piece of art that brings happiness carries far more emotional value than an impeccably coordinated, neutral room.
Mistakes to avoid:
Confusing joy with excess: “Dopamine decor is not about filling every corner with bright colours,” warns Madan. “When everything competes for attention, nothing becomes special. A joyful home needs rhythm, pauses, and balance.”
Relying on mass-market trends: “When we crowd a space with affirmation posters and LED strips, the space loses its personality,” says Kalra. “Avoid repetitive mass-produced designs. Experiment with multicolored striped lampshades or apothecary vases unapologetically.”
Decorating for the camera: Don’t style your home just for social media. Design for real life—choose the colour that recalls summer, the armchair that invites you to curl up, or the object that sparks a fond memory.
