The chief minister’s remarks came a day after former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah joined the BJP, marking a significant political development ahead of the state polls.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that several Congress leaders are set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) according to a “pre-decided schedule,” asserting that the party has already begun preparations for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma said that electoral readiness remains a continuous process for the BJP.
“For me, all elections are important. BJP has already started preparing for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections,” he said, adding that Congress leaders who are expected to switch sides would “comply with the schedule.”
The chief minister’s remarks came a day after former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah formally joined the BJP, marking a significant political development in the state.
Borah was inducted into the BJP on Sunday at the party’s state headquarters, Vajpayee Bhawan, in Guwahati, in the presence of Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia.
His induction followed a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and came after approval from BJP national president JP Nadda.
Soon after joining the party, Borah was appointed as a state executive member of the BJP’s Assam unit.
Chief Minister Sarma described him as the “last Hindu leader” in the Assam Congress and said Borah would be accommodated in a “favourable seat” to enhance his prospects in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Borah is being seen as a potential BJP candidate from his home constituency of Bihpuria in Lakhimpur district.
Addressing party workers after his induction, Borah said he had spent 32 years in the Congress but decided to switch sides placing national and regional interests above party loyalty.
“The interest of the country, my land and its people is far above personal or party interest,” he said, adding that he joined the BJP to work for Assam and the nation.
Borah also praised Sarma, calling him the most influential leader in the Northeast, and said he would act as a bridge for disillusioned Congress workers willing to join the BJP with dignity.
Drawing from the Mahabharata, he likened such leaders to Karna and urged them to align with what he termed the “Pandavas.”
Welcoming Borah into the party, Sarma said the former Congress leader was beginning a new political chapter aligned with the BJP’s ideology and assured him respect and support within the party.
